Grocery shopping with babies

When they were in the infant carriers, there was mucho room in the basket of our Contours.  Now with the seats in there, not so much.  I'm trying to figure out logistics here.

I was thinking that now that they can sit, I can put one in the cart seat, and the other in a carrier.  Does this work, or would they fight the whole time.  Also, I am very short.  Would I be able to get the groceries in/out of the basket with a baby attached to me?

Re: Grocery shopping with babies

  • Here is what I do:

I put them both in the front to back stroller and push the stroller while dragging a cart behind me. Or, if they are secure enough in their sitting, take two carts and sit them each in one. I usually just do the stroller thing because its less germy. Its not sexy, but it gets the job done! :)

Also, you are more likely to get people to move the F outta your way when you are coming at them with the double stroller ("Awwww look! Twins!").

    Good luck!

  • various ways...

if they are small enough you can seat both up top - with outer leg in the leg hole and inner leg bent so they are sort of turned towards each other - i did this a lot when they were that age.

ask your local grocery store to get some carts with double seats up top- most of the ones that have thos "cars/trucks" stuck on the front have 2 seats up top - so look to see if they have them, too... if not- email/call them and ask for them- let them know that other stores in the area have them and you are forced to shop there b/c you have twins who both need a seat in the cart... but you prefer to shop at their store - and so do many other twin moms or moms with 2 small children.... i did this and my store responded by buying about 6 new carts within a few weeks!

you can do the push and pull - push a stroller and pull a cart... i do this when i need to purchase a lot or large items.

you can get large bags and clip them to your stroller and fill them with groceries- i have done this with the huge Ikea bags and large carabiener clips (sold as mommy clips at BRU- but you can buy at Walmart for 1/2 the price in the area that sells hooks for doors, etc).

  • My first option would be to see if they have double carts.  Many do, although you may have to search/ask.  If they don't, definitely ask if they would get some.

I've had a lot of luck when DDs were slightly older doing one on my back in the Ergo and one in the cart.  That's the way we still do things a lot.  It helps that I have one that really likes to be on my back (thankfully she's also the lighter one :-) and one that likes to be in the cart.  I would definitely give the cart/carrier a try before you resort to stroller/cart or cart/cart shopping.  I could never manage that, but I guess I'm also not a great driver. :-)

  • I push the stroller and pull the cart.  A few times I've carried one and put the other in the seat, but for whatever reason, I've always found that doing the stroller and cart worked best.  If I have a lot of things to get and the cart gets heavy to pull/maneuver, I will leave it at the bottom of the aisle, push the cart up the aisle grabbing what I need (throw it in the stroller basket), and then go back and dump it in the cart.

  • i wear my daughter on my back (because she is lighter, 22 pounds) and put my son in the cart seat. i have been doing this way since they were 6 months.  At 22 pounds, i still find it very comfortable to wear a baby on back - i wouldnt on my chest or side though.  i am petite too and i dont find it restrictin at all.

Our grocery store also has an attachment on some of their carts so that it accommodates two kids.   I use them everyonce in a while the kids seem to like it.  They do not fight.  You can ask your store to get some of these if they dont already have some.

  • Costco

only place I like taking the twins shopping, and all their carts are double-seated

  • At my normal grocery store the only double carts they have are the ones with the giant blue attachment in front, and I hate those.  Driving a boat is easier and more precise than pushing one of those honkers.  At that store I put one in the regular cart and wear the other on my back if it's going to be a big trip.  If it's just a small trip I put one in the front of the cart and the other in the back.

I get a lot of big stuff at Sam's since they have regular double carts and cheaper prices on a lot of that kind of stuff anyway.
