new to the board! questions about wool

LO should be here soon! I've been looking into making some wool soakers/shorties/longies. Primarily by knitting or crochet. Does anyone have experience doing this? Do you find that the fit lasts long? Or have you had to make bigger ones as baby grows? Know any good patterns? And is there a certain wool you find works best. I work primarily with alpaca, and have so much of it laying around..

Lots of dumb ?'s, thanks!

Re: new to the board! questions about wool

  • I've knitted a wool wrap-style cover and a pair of longies. I've crocheted 2 soakers.

The fit on the the wrap-style soaker was pretty good for a while, but it is a sized pattern, so DD eventually outgrew it. I knitted the longies in a size large-ish so they're still big on her, but I use them for naps. My finishing on the crocheted soakers was too tight and I wasn't able to use them on her :( Next time I"ll use a pattern with a drawstring to give me more flexibility.

I would try googling patterns, or ravelry.com.

I wouldn't use alpaca. That's going to be super warm on a baby's butt. I'd go with wool. You can use anything from 70% wool and up. Merino would be nice if you have it, but any type of wool will do.

    Not dumb questions at all.

  • I use 100% wool - I don't know if alpaca would work or not.  Paton's is the brand i use most often since its pretty cheap and available at michael's.

My favorite pattern is the "Curly Purly Soaker" available here:

They are quick to knit up, and fit nicely.  DD has been wearing the M size for the last couple of months and is only just now starting to grow out of them.
