Cloth Diapering

Washing inserts: sticky?

I just got in my first cloth diapers (a variety of pockets -- Rumparoos, BG, kissaluvs, kawaii), and I'm washing them as instructed (my understanding is that they only need to be washed once). I'm washing them in RG Classic, and I used two tablespoons, as the RG instruction packet directed.

When the inserts came out of the dryer (which had been stripped of all dryer sheet residue by doing a load of towels -- it only had wool dryer balls in them), they were all sticky to the touch. Like all the little rough edges of the fibers were catching on my fingers. What's up with that? Did i use too much detergent? I did a double rinse, washed in hot/cold.

Was it the dryer balls? Is my dryer still full of dryer sheet residue? Should I have washed the dryer balls before using it?

Does anyone know what's going on?

  • Microfiber has a "rough" texture to it, if that's what you mean.  I personally think it's gross to touch, and am glad it goes inside a diaper.

Shouldn't affect functionality.  Oh.  Do you have an HE machine?  You can usually use half of what the detergent package says.  Just FYI...

  • I don't have an HE machine. It's not that I'd describe it as rough -- it's sticky -- like it catches on my fingertips when I touch it. It wasn't like that before I washed it, which is why I think it has something to do with the washing.
