Cloth Diapering

gDipes Questions

We just got some gDiapers to try out and I have a couple questions for anyone who's used them.

How do I wash them?  I know they can go in the washer, but can I just throw the covers, liners, and pads all in together and wash them all on warm? Can all the parts go in the dryer or would it be better to hang dry them?

Can I use prefolds in place of the pads?  I plan on using the washable pads anyway, so I was wondering if they would work as well if I folded up a prefold and stuck it in the liner.

How many of everything do I need?  I have 4 covers, 6 liners and 6 pads right now.  I was thinking I may get a couple more covers and a dozen or so liners and wash every 2-3 days.  I've heard that you don't have to change out the liners for wet diapers.  Is that right, or do you change them every time?

That's all I have for now.  Any advice or info would be great!  TIA!

I wash the gcloth inserts in "dirty diaper type laundry" seperately from the liners and covers.   I put these in the dryer during winter.  For the covers and liners, I wash in the machine and hang dry it all - but the covers can easily go in the dryer... the liners will last longer if they don't go in the dryer.

Can I use prefolds in place of the pads?  I plan on using the washable pads anyway, so I was wondering if they would work as well if I folded up a prefold and stuck it in the liner.    I've that it works, but I haven't done that.

6 - 8 covers is pretty decent for one baby and 18 gcloth (or other insert) worked fine for us for one baby, but 24 is better:)   It's nice to have a few extra liners around... maybe two for every cover you have.   I don't change the liners for wet diapers.  Actually, I use two covers a day (with the liners in them) and just alternate them throughout the day.   I only change the liners for poopy dipes (but, now that Natalie is older I don't have to do that every time either.....)

That's all I have for now.  Any advice or info would be great!  TIA!

Are you trying other diapers as well?   It's probably a good idea to try other kinds of cloth diapers, as well.    As much as I like our gdiapers, I know that they are not for everybody and it's also nice to have a variety - it seems like different diapers serve different purposes in our house:)

Oh and really make sure that you are putting the g's on right... it makes a world of difference for some babies!   For Natalie, it really doesn't matter how they go on, but for Dominic I have to have them on him "just so."    It's easy, but it's just something to pay attention to.

Can I use prefolds in place of the pads?  I plan on using the washable pads anyway, so I was wondering if they would work as well if I folded up a prefold and stuck it in the liner.  I only use prefolds, it worked great for me and I already had them because I also use prefolds and covers.

I think that if you are going to use gdiapers full time 6 covers would be good and 2 or 3 snap in liners per cover. I don't change liners with every wet diaper. Just wipe it down.

That's all I have for now.  Any advice or info would be great!  TIA!

  • I have been using g's with prefolds for 4 months now and haven't had any issues. I have 4 covers and I bought an extra pack of liners (though I'm not sure I needed to) and I have about 16 prefolds that I use (I also use fleece liners over the prefolds to keep LO feeling dry). I do laundry every 3 days no problem.
