2nd Trimester

A ? for 2nd+ time moms

Has anyone ever had spotting/bleeding throughout their entire pregnancy and delivered a healthy baby?  What was the cause of your bleeding, if any?

Re: A ? for 2nd+ time moms

  • Last time, I had spotting till about 16ish weeks.  Maybe a little later.  I had a low-lying placenta (didn't know until that was the cause until my 12 week u/s) and that apparently causes spotting.  I delivered (knock wood) a happy, healthy baby boy.

This time, I was originally carrying twins, but lost one early on.  That caused some spotting and I had to take progesterone till 12 weeks to help maintain the healthy pregnancy.   Spotting stopped around then I think.

Another cause they suggested in my first pregnancy had to do with Rh factor incompatibility.  Turns out wasn't an issue... DH and I both have + blood, but one of my friends did have this issue and it caused bleeding/spotting until she got a shot - though she had to get it earlier in the pregnancy than women with the issue normally do.  She went on to have (knock wood) a happy, healthy, 9lb baby girl.

Good luck - I know this is super scary, but when I was spotting and asked around, it seems like a lot of women do.

  • I did not have it all the way through.  I had it 2-3 times in my first and second trimesters.  I have a bicornuate uterus and they think I was bleeding from the other "horn".
  • YES!...well and no..since I haven't delivered yet.

I posted this exact question a few months ago.

I have had bleeding/spotting my entire pregnancy!

some daysI bled red and pretty constant, some days brown. But always, something. If I went a few days without spotting I would be shocked, but then it would start again. I would say maybe one week at most.

At 22 weeks I went to L&D for red bleeding, not heavy but enough. No cause

24 weeks- back in L&D with more spotting- did a lot more tests and thought I COULD have a very slight placental abruption (tear the causes a seperation in the placent from the uterine wall).  Labs came back very slightly abnormal.

27 weeks I had a big bleed, like a period with clots. I was admitted for 4 days to the hospital for bedrest. I begin having contractions 2 minutes apart and it was very scary. They had the nicu team come and talk to me about delivering a 27 weeker. I was given a dose of the steroid shots.

I have been on bedrest ever since and happy to say, not a single bleeding episode since! I am seen twice a week for non stress tests to monitor baby, as well as a weekly check for amniotic fluid. I also see the high risk doc every 2 weeks and a growth scan once a month.

I would never wish this on someone but to be honest it was nice to finally have an explanation for the bleeding.

I hope you get some answers soon!

OMG, you poor girl!  I can't imagine what you must've went through!  Best wishes!!!!

The only answer I've gotten to date was at my 8 week appointment, the OB told me that the bleeding came from the outside of my cervix.  I was told I could deal with this the whole way through and that I shouldn't panic unless it turned into a heavy period with cramping.  I'm guessing my cervix is overly sensitive because when the spotting happens, I can usually come up with a reason why, whether I overdid it at the gym, went to the bathroom (#2), or stretched a bit too much while sleeping in a weird position.  It never lasts more than a day, so I try not to get too nuts about it.  I don't know if maybe it is a result of surgery I had on my cervix a long time ago, but the doc gave me a note to take to my anatomy scan ultrasound to make sure they check it out just to be safe in case it's incompetent.

I wrote this post to see if anyone else had the same problem.

  • I'm pg with #2 and with my DS I never spotted the entire pregnancy.  Nor did I have morning/all day sickness.  This pregnancy is different.  I was sick all day until about week 10 or 11 AND I've been having a lot of "peachish brown" (sorry TMI) discharge.  My doc also says not to worry unless it's brite red or if I have heavy cramping.  I'll have it for a couple days and then it will stop.... usually after I lift too much or am to active.  After losing three babies to miscarriage, I will probably always "check" when I wipe.
  • I spotting brown my whole first tri with #1and then on and off the rest of the pregnancy. This time I think I've spotted brown like twice and once was after the internal. I was always told brown spotting is ok and if I had 2 tablespoons or more of bright red bleeding with cramps, then to call the ob.
