Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Q's about bottle weaning 12 mth old...

Currently DS is getting 5-6 bottles a day = 25-30 ozs formula.  He doesn't seem to be very hungry to eat solids.  Either that or he is a really picky eater.

I understand that eventually he should only be drinking about 3 cups of whole milk a day.  But I am having difficulty figuring out how to get there from six bottles a day.  He will drink a tiny bit out of sippy but not much.  He easily get bored of it (for lack of better words).

How did you do it?

  • wow...cant believe he still on that many bottles.  DS dropped some naturally on his own so we are now down to 4 but the 4th one is now only about 2 ounces of whole milk in a sippy.   We are at 7 ounces in the morning and then 4.5 ounces after each nap.   You can just slowly decrease in each bottle or if you can tell that there is one that he's just not interested in work on getting rid of that one and ramp of his food in take.  I hope that helps.   We are working on transitioning to whole milk right now ourselves.

  • He probably isn't hungry and that is why he isn't eating solids.  DD was only at 3 bottles at that age, now she just gets 3 cups of milk a day.

Well DS is a little small in around the 35-40th percentile so I didn't want to take away formula from him too soon.  As doc said that formula in the first year has the most calories and nutrition for them.  Now that he is one I will definitely start reducing the amount of milk.  Some of those 5 bottles are only 4 ozs.

How many meals a day is he eating??  I dont how you fit in that many ...it's hard for us to get in the 3 meals 3 bottles - 1 sippy and sometimes a snack as well.
  • What we did for DS was start offering him a sippy with whole milk during his meals. I never made a big deal out of it. I just said, "here's your milk if you want some." & set it down on his tray.  One afternoon, he just started drinking it. It was WONDERFUL.

Before he transitioned, he was still drinking about 5 bottles a day also.  Slowly he weaned himself down and is taking around 15-20oz of whole milk a day.

  • Your situation seems pretty similar to ours.  DS is small (2nd percentile for weight) and the pedi still wants us to keep the liquid calories high.  At the 1 year mark DS was getting 6 bottles a day (1 BM, the rest formula) for a total of 30-32 oz.  Even after switching to whole milk, we were advised to keep the milk intake > 25 oz.  Our pediatrician seemed to think it was better to change one thing at a time rather than everything at once, so we switched him to whole milk and kept the bottles.  The number of bottles has gradually decreased.  He's naturally started taking more at a time and spacing out his feedings.  We give him a sippy of milk at every meal and if he starts drinking more from the sippy we'll start dropping the oz in the bottles.  But, for now, we've decided that it's more important to keep the intake high than it is to worry about whether it comes from a bottle or sippy.
