Cloth Diapering

Nervous Husband, how to help

Ok, so I have a husband that's willing to try but not happy about trying cloth diapering.  I have my heart set on CDing so I'm wondering if any of you have any suggestions on helping me.  We are trying :)  But I want it to keep going.  His biggest worry is the poo.  I've gone down the list of health, money, and environment and he just keeps saying I want to throw it away.  Do you think his fears will simply calm once baby gets here or do you have other suggestions, experience, or thoughts.

Re: Nervous Husband, how to help

  • I started CD'ing when DS was about 6-8 weeks old and DH w as in afghanistan at the time.  He came home 2 months ago and he was hesitant at first but once I showed him the diapers and how they work he loves it.  He's seen his bum in a CD and then occassionaly when he's in sposies his bum turns a little red.  He hated that.  :)  He now has his favorite diapers.  I pretty much deal with the poo.  He'll change the diaper but I swish it in the toilet.  When we move we're getting a diaper sprayer so that will make things easier.

I think once LO is here and he's been using them his fears will calm.  DH's did.

  • DH did not want to do it.  I asked him if we could try it with CD we borrowed from a friend for one week.  I told him it would be our decision together whether or not we continued. If he hated it, I was prepared to compromise.  Day 2 he says "CDs aren't as bad as I thought".  Day 3 he says "I sorta like CD".  I can always guess which CD will be used when I come home (he watches LO during the day). He's got his faves now!

  • I do the diapering 95-99% of the time; problem solved.

You can always leave him home alone with nothing but CDs for a day. He'll get the hang of it in no time ;)

  • Something that helped my H give the tentative ok is getting diaper liners-- I know they undermine some of the eco-friendly aspect, but they totally take care of the poo issue. If baby poops, you can just peel out the liner & flush it (no swishing required); if there's no poop, you can wash the liners and get a few uses out of them. • I'm going through the same thing with my DH. I have been set on CDing from the beginning, and he has been extremely skeptical most of the time. He finally agreed to be openminded about it if I was openminded about not CD if it was too complicated. In the end, I'm hoping that he comes around and finds that is much easier than he is expecting.

His big argument is if CD is so much easier now, why don't more people do it. I have one IRL friend that CDs. I think because I've done all the forum reading and researching, I see how big is it for the online community, even if no one we know IRL CDs.

Once daycare said that they would CD our babe (even though no other babies are CD there) he pretty much lost his leverage. I plan on sending our baby with BG AIOs to daycare to make it easier. I also bought some fitteds and xs aio's for him to use to make it easier, and I plan to use prefolds mostly when I'm changing her.

If anyone else has any other convincing tactics I'd love to hear them. I really think he's going to be more on board once she comes, right now it's just the unknown!
