Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How long did it take from standing unassisted and taking steps to full out walking?

First, I know every child is different so I know this won't give me a concrete answer but I am just curious as to how long it took your child from taking steps here and there to actually walking?

  • A few days. He started taking actual steps (like more than 3) and literally like 4 days later he was just walking around like he had done it forever. Now he thinks since he has been walking for a couple of weeks he can run....not so much.

  • She took two steps toward me one night - then she did two more that night. Then the next day she did three or four in a row. Then something like six the next day. After maybe a week walking was her primary mode of transport.

  • He has been standing on his own for a while, almost a month ago he took his first unassisted steps... he is still not walking and the independent steps are sporadic.

This is us too AfterAll.  DD has been standing on her own for awhile too and will get up and down on her own.  If she doesn't think about it, she will take 2-4 steps, but as soon as she thinks about it, she just gets down and crawls.  It seems like she has the ability but isn't brave enough to do it yet.  It's pretty cute to watch though.

  • He took his first steps before standing much unassisted. And then after taking up to 5-6 steps at a time it took him almost a month to walk around on a regular basis.
  • He stood on his own for weeks and never took a step.  He could even put himself into a standing position without anything to pull up on.  The first time he ever took steps it was like 6 or 8.  The next day he was walking across rooms and a day or two later he was officially a walker.

  • About a month but I think our trip hindered her walking by a couple weeks.  While on vacation none of my family members wanted to put her down.  She went from taking a few independent steps to full blown walking in a week though.

  • At 11 months, DS could stand unassisted.  Two weeks later he could take steps while holding hands.  Two weeks after that he could walk unassisted, although a bit wobbly.  And two weeks after that he was walking pretty confidently on various surfaces (i.e. grass, uneven dirt).

According to my MIL, DH started walking at 1 year, but decided he didn't like it and went back to crawling.  He didn't walk on a regular basis until 15 months.   Like they say, every kid's different and does their thing in their own time.
