Has anyone adopted a family for Christmas?

We went through our local salvation army and adopted a family this year but its for a single dad with 3 kids and he seems very uncomfortable asking for things. I know I am getting all of them clothes and shoes but what else do you think may be a good and interesting gift for the family?

What about a gift card for them to all go out to eat one night? That might be nice. I'm sure they don't get to do that much.

I adopt family through my work every year.  If the program that you are doing it through is legit, they should be contacting the family and have a list all ready for you from the parent(s).  We got three kids, with a list of there age, sizes for clothes and shoes and several toys the kids suggested.  Do you at least have the ages of the kids and maybe I can help w/suggestions from the ones we got?

Salvation Army sent me all their info but I asked to talk to the family directly so that I could get a better feel. I have all the childrens sizes and toy suggestion but I am stumped as to what to get the family as a whole. I was thinking maybe Kroger gift cards, Family board games or a gift certificate to the local movie theater. What do you think?

We get the kids stuff off the list and then buy a few "parent" gifts.  Usually a walmart gift card and a robe/slippers.  We've been told not to buy grocery gift cards since they get those from another organization, but SA may work differently, and you could certainly replace the walmart gift card for a Kroegers.  The movie tickets are a good idea too!

This will be our first year doing it and we are so excited. We still have not received any information on the family but I was told you get a list of what you could get them.

A gift for the family could be a GC to a restaurant for a family dinner or maybe a GC to the movies sound like something fun to do.
