NTR: Help me with generic Xmas presents please!

DH's work did the draw-a-name thing. He got one of the radiology techs. He said she's engaged, about 35, seems interested in home decorating (reads Southern Living, etc). I asked if she seems like she wears makeup, does herself up, etc and he said "I guess." So what $20 gift should he give her? I mentioned a high end lotion like Archipelago or Kiehl's and he made a face. I don't think he wants to get that personal. Any thoughts? I guess he could do a gift card to Starbucks/movie/local restaurant or deli/etc.

We also do a gift exchange with his extended family. We all bring a gift in the $25-30 range and draw numbers to see who picks first, etc. The theme is something to be used outside (examples given: gardening stuff). Anybody have any creative ideas?

TIA!

  • How about a nice Shelf Elf...

  • I would have DH give her a gift card.  The ideas for Starbucks, movies or local restaurants is not a bad idea.

  • I have given stationary, thank you notes specifically.  Everyone needs those around Christmas time. Mrs. Meyers cleaning products are nice (they have a little 4 pack in a sort of beer holder type pack that is cute).  A holiday decoration.  Kitchen things like a spatula, spoon, and hand grater, which everyone has and can always use another.

You can do a gift card to.  My work gift exchange turned into an exchange of $10 Moe's card (the burrito place in the parking lot).  It was really kind of pathetic.  Adults standing around exchanging $10 gift card to the same restaurant for a 1/2 hour.

  • GC to nearby resturant.  B&B works. MAC makeup. IDK, I stink at these things.
  • maybe a sephora gift card.

Yep that's what I wanted to avoid!  I like a lot of the ideas you and others have put out. I will run them by my DH! Thanks ya'll!

  • For your family thing--is there a local sports team that is popular amongst the family?  Sports gifts are always super popular with our family gift exchange.  Also, if your family is pro-alcohol, you could do a cute basket with drink mixes and glasses.
  • Ok, for your DH, he knows she is engaged.  I think pp's suggestion of thank you cards/stationary is a great idea.  Find a really nice box that could be used for any occassion, but are wedding appropriate as well.  I would have loved something like that when I was engaged.

  • I think the GC idea is nice.  If you are wanting something a little more personal you could look into a magazine subscription maybe?  Like Real Simple-that has home decor/recipes/organization ideas in it and might be a hit.

  • I agree that lotion etc, might be too personal, especially since he doesn't know what scents she likes, if she's allergic to anything, etc. I really think a gift card would be safest. If you have a local mall, he should get a gift card for the mall rather than a particular store, that way she can get whatever she wants. At least that's what I'd do for someone I didn't know well.

For your family gift exchange, here are some random ideas:

    -A nice compass

    -A swiss army knife

    -A thermos

    -A watering can

    -A bocci ball set

    -Horse shoe game

    -Grilling accessories

    -Gloves, hat and/or scarf

    -pedometer

  • Oooooh I love the outdoor game idea!

I also liked the idea someone had above about our favorite team (we are all diehard LSU fans) -- maybe a cute metal bin that can hold ice/drinks/etc. They have a lot of stuff like that at local gardening stores back home.

Thanks ya'll! So many great ideas
