Talk to me about de-swaddling...

How old were your LOs when you did it?

What made you think they were ready?

How did you do it? One arm, both arms, cold turkey...?

How long did it take for them to adjust?

My LOs have been swaddled and sleeping in their cribs since day 1 and are doing great with it. Recently they've began to roll over (back to belly) and occasionally do it in the middle of the night, despite being swaddled. I know everyone says once they can roll you shouldn't swaddle anymore but I'm afraid they're not ready yet. What were your experiences?

  • How old were your LOs when you did it? About 6mo.... all 3 of them.

What made you think they were ready? starting to be able to turn over easily.

How did you do it? One arm, both arms, cold turkey...? did one arm to see how it went. Gibby didn't do so great so he was in it a little longer, but Gray was fine with 1 arm out that first try- so we did no swaddle the next night and he was fine.

How long did it take for them to adjust? gray = right away... gibby = a few days. i don't remember with griffin :)

If they are rolling while in the swaddle i would start taking them out... do one arm out for a few nights- see how it goes.  my guys were all late rollers so we were able to swaddle into the 6th month easily- but if they are rolling now i'd start weaning them from it.

we stopped using swaddles at nap time around 3mo, so they were used to it during the day... start there if you haven't already.

  • we stopped when they started busting out on their own. but if your worried then i think it is common to start with one arm, then both and see how they do. also with their arms free they should be able to control their heads enough to be ok on their tummies. GL.

What made you think they were ready?  They won't take a pacifier, so when they started finding and sucking on their fingers/thumbs I wanted to encourage it.  Also, they were trying really really hard to get out of the miracle blankets at that point which I think was affecting their sleep.   I found one with both arms and a leg free one night.

How did you do it? One arm, both arms, cold turkey...?   Cold turkey.  The first night, they both woke up about 4 times in the first 2 hours, and I wrapped them back up for a few more days.   Tried it again, one baby at a time, and they did fine.

How long did it take for them to adjust?   On that second try, they were good from the first night.

  • How old were your LOs when you did it?  Last week at 7 weeks.

What made you think they were ready? They were freaking out whenever we tried to swaddle them and consistently breaking swaddle. They both prefer to sleep with their arms above their heads.

How did you do it? One arm, both arms, cold turkey...? Just did it. They've been fine in sleep sacks since.

How long did it take for them to adjust? Didn't need to adjust.

     Good luck!
