Retiring at the age of 40?

Are any of you ladies planning on retiring by the age of 40?  This is my goal, and DH will probably follow suit shortly after.  I'm wondering what those of you on the same track are going to do afterwards-how many kids and what ages will they be?  Will you travel, etc...?

Re: Retiring at the age of 40?

  • I would love that.  I am 36 now and I'll probably be starting back at work at 38 or 39.  It's going to be hard after having all this time at home.  If I could never go back to work, I would still do costume design for the local theatres for fun, maybe have a small etsy store and volunteer at the kid's schools.

My husband will probably never retire, but he does get time off when his projects are over.  We are already discussing a Disney cruise in 2014!  That is actually the year I turn 40 and the kids will both be old enough (4 and 5) to go off in the kids groups together.

  • My parents did this. I may or may not depending on what I am doing and what the economy is like at that time. I would like to leave a big inheritance for my kid(s) the way I have. We shall see. My parents say it's nice to have all the free time to travel and enjoy their granddaughter.
  • I will be able to retire at 42 and plan on getting another job and getting 2 paychecks. Then after sometime, I'll be done. Travel, sit on the back porch in a rocking chair, whatever.
  • Thanks, ladies.  I am thinking I might do something else also.  I'm turning 32 in march, so retiring from my job when I'm 40 seems so much closer than it did before.  By then LO will be 10 and we'll probably have another child (7 years old?).  I would guess we'll start travelling when the kids are teenagers??

  • Wow.  That would be nice.  Can't even fathom that being possible though.  DH won't even be retired when I'm 40 and he's 9 years older than I am

  • Yep, I plan to win the lottery next year and then retire at 40. At that point Will and Alex will be 8, our twin girls will be 5, and we will hire a governess and a mother's helper and travel the world.

  • I graduated from college at 40 and started a new career.  Before that I'd been a stay at home mom then a 911 dispatcher when my kids went to school (and I got divorced =/).  At that time my kids were all teenagers.

Now at 45 I don't see myself ever retiring but I think I will start travel nursing when my son goes away to college (next year) while Princess B is still portable lol.  The oldest 3 kids are already grown and gone.  Eventually, I'll just cut down my hours to 1 shift a week or something like that.  I'm lucky that I'm able to do alot of travelling now.

My husband will be retiring at the age of 41 (5 more years, yes I'm a semi-cougar).  He plans on going back to school for his master's.

  • There is just no way we'd have enough money saved for me to retire at 40. My husband is 40 and works for the federal government, and has to work at least 10 more years before he can retire. Even when he does retire, I think he'll start a second career. Our kids will still be fairly young at that point, so I think we'll need the income.

  • Well, seeing as I will be graduating with my Masters in Teaching in 2018(I'll be 31), and just getting my career as an elementary school teacher started, retiring at 40 is not an option. But it doesn't really sound appealing either... What would I do all day while Basil is at school?

  • Do we really need another post reminding everyone how much money you make?

  • Well, it's not 40, but DH will be eligible to retire at 46. But he'll probably get another job, or start another career, while also drawing his pension. I'm still in nursing school, so there will be no retirement in my 40's for me. I wouldn't want to retire that early anyway. I'd rather earn more while I'm easily able to, and then be able to enjoy my retirement that much more.
  • 50 is my goal.  I am healthy enough that at 50, i can still run marathons over the world and do all that sort of stuff.  But, the kids will be grown and my DH is more on board with the idea (he likes to work so he wouldnt retire but he would cut back and travel). And who knows, after a few years of travel, i may get bored and want to go back to work, too. 40 seems young - not sure what i would do with the rest of my life.  A few Ironmans?  But even after 10 yrs of that, i would only be 50!

  • BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

I wish I could have retired 8 months ago. But, alas, no, I'm on my way to 41 with debt, no savings and aging parents.

If you can retire by 40, more power to you.

Though I can't imagine amassing enough savings to live off of for 40 years plus (assuming you live into your 80s). So I'd imagine you'd have a 2nd career.

  • What if your kids want to go to college? The cost of tuition for two would be a lot of money.

  • We talk about freedom 45.  On paper, it is a possibility.

If it happens, we will have 2 kids: a six year old and a four year old.  Therefore we will have a reasonable amount of freedom to travel should we want to.

Retirement for me will likely mean doing something else because I want to, not for a paycheque.  I think I want to get involved with children and families in need.  But we'll see.

We have a cottage up north and a condo in Florida, so regardless we will be spending time at those places.  We also have friends scattered across the world that we would enjoy visiting.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • DH will be retiring in about 10 years. DS will be 12 and DD will be 22. Once DS is out of the house, we'll definitely travel and get another vacation home.

I am crying laughing so hard at this right now. It totally looks like a hamster.

  • Erino- You do realize that when you are both retired that you will have to spend all your time together. Given your history, I'm seeing this not ending well.
