Are any of you ladies planning on retiring by the age of 40? This is my goal, and DH will probably follow suit shortly after. I'm wondering what those of you on the same track are going to do afterwards-how many kids and what ages will they be? Will you travel, etc...?
Re: Retiring at the age of 40?
I would love that. I am 36 now and I'll probably be starting back at work at 38 or 39. It's going to be hard after having all this time at home. If I could never go back to work, I would still do costume design for the local theatres for fun, maybe have a small etsy store and volunteer at the kid's schools.
My husband will probably never retire, but he does get time off when his projects are over. We are already discussing a Disney cruise in 2014! That is actually the year I turn 40 and the kids will both be old enough (4 and 5) to go off in the kids groups together.

Where did you go on vacation shelf elf?
I graduated from college at 40 and started a new career. Before that I'd been a stay at home mom then a 911 dispatcher when my kids went to school (and I got divorced =/). At that time my kids were all teenagers.
Now at 45 I don't see myself ever retiring but I think I will start travel nursing when my son goes away to college (next year) while Princess B is still portable lol. The oldest 3 kids are already grown and gone. Eventually, I'll just cut down my hours to 1 shift a week or something like that. I'm lucky that I'm able to do alot of travelling now.
My husband will be retiring at the age of 41 (5 more years, yes I'm a semi-cougar). He plans on going back to school for his master's.

I'm jealous. Looks like you got a nice tan while you were there.
DH: 31, no issues

7/2012 150mg of Gonal-f + trigger + IUI = BFN
8/2012 Surprise unmedicated BFP!! Due May 8, 2013
Nope. I'll probably just be getting back to work by then...
50 is my goal. I am healthy enough that at 50, i can still run marathons over the world and do all that sort of stuff. But, the kids will be grown and my DH is more on board with the idea (he likes to work so he wouldnt retire but he would cut back and travel). And who knows, after a few years of travel, i may get bored and want to go back to work, too. 40 seems young - not sure what i would do with the rest of my life. A few Ironmans? But even after 10 yrs of that, i would only be 50!
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
I wish I could have retired 8 months ago. But, alas, no, I'm on my way to 41 with debt, no savings and aging parents.
If you can retire by 40, more power to you.
Though I can't imagine amassing enough savings to live off of for 40 years plus (assuming you live into your 80s). So I'd imagine you'd have a 2nd career.

Are you sleeping on a hamster?
We talk about freedom 45. On paper, it is a possibility.
If it happens, we will have 2 kids: a six year old and a four year old. Therefore we will have a reasonable amount of freedom to travel should we want to.
Retirement for me will likely mean doing something else because I want to, not for a paycheque. I think I want to get involved with children and families in need. But we'll see.
We have a cottage up north and a condo in Florida, so regardless we will be spending time at those places. We also have friends scattered across the world that we would enjoy visiting.
I am crying laughing so hard at this right now. It totally looks like a hamster.
Would you deny Shelf Elf a pet?
Come on Elf. You won't get much sun like that!
