Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

please help reassure me if you have dealt with a high fever

B had a 103.2 Sunday night-  called the ped, said to give him tylenol/motrin, etc.  It brought it down for a bit, but on Monday he woke with a 103.9.   He took a 4 hr nap Monday and we kept dosing him with meds.   Monday night into Tuesday morning was horrible.  Fever was being kept down but he was up from 2-5, so miserable all Tuesday.  We went to the ped on Tuesday-  she said his lungs sounded good, ears looked good, throat was red (theyd id a rapid strep test and it was negative).  They took his temp with the underarm thing and got it as normal  (which I think is BS but whatever).

So we got the dreaded virus - watch it- wait it out- give him motrin/tylemnol diagnosis.

Well last night he woke at 4am with a 104.5 temp.  Gave him motrin, got him back down, when he woke at 7 it was 101.6.  I already called the ped and am waiting for a call back.

I know she checked him out-  but i am scared, it is high, it has been since sunday, it was higher last night than it has been (i though fevers peaked day 2-3).  I want to cry and m poor baby is just not himself.   Not eating or drinking really- ugh.

  • wow I would be scared too.. your poor baby :(

have you tried giving him luke warm baths? they also help to reduce fever

for what it's worth i think you did the right thing calling the dr back, I would be doing the same if not taking DS to the ER.

  • I would ask them to do blood work to check his platelets and white blood cells since the fever has been so high for so long.

It's probably just a viral infection, but sometimes the body has a hard time fighting it off and they can get a bacterial infection on top of it. If that's the case then he'll need antibiotics to get rid of the bacterial infection so that his body can focus on getting rid of the viral infection.

  • I'm so sorry. High fevers suck! We were in and out of the ER three times with Jake last spring.

I would bring him back in, they should be doing a blood draw and urine sample at this point. At least, that's what they did with Jake.

Jake wouldn't eat anything either, and barely drank, I would give him water/pedialyte with a dropper every 15 minutes or so. We alternated Advil and Tylenol every three hours.

    I hope he's better soon.

    Big hugs!

  • My LO had something similar last Thanksgiving.  She got up to 104.7 so I took her to the ER.  THe Dr. had us strip her down to her diaper so her body wouldn't hold the heat in and alternate from motrin and tylenol every dose.  She never had any other symptoms other than high fever.  Once the fever passed her whole body broke out in a rash called roseola which lasted for 4 days.  It's super scary, but know that your Dr. is there if for nothing else but to reassure you your baby is going to be ok.
  • We have been dealing with this the past few days.  Actually 104.5 for three days.  My daughter ended up having coxsackie virus (hand, foot, and mouth).  As long as the fever is responding to meds he should be fine.  Definitely talk to the dr. so they can see what is going on with him though.

  • Sorry you are going through this.  We went through the same exact thing a few weeks ago.  He had a high temp of 104.5 which happened to be while we were in the doctor's office, and he never dropped below 100 for an entire week.

We alternted Motrin and Tylenol, kept him home from daycare, let him sleep, gave him cool baths, tried to keep him hydrated as best we could.  It was really nerve wracking, but it did eventually clear up.

I thought it was Rosaeola but he never ended up breaking into a rash when the fever broke, so I guess it was just a plain old virus.
