Parenting after 35

I need to come to a decison ...

OK, I know this is getting out of hand and I have other pressing things to deal with but need to decide by tomorrow.

 $525.00 plus sales tx

 or

https://www.dooney.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=41212

On sale near me for $149.00 (including tax)

I have enough points to cover 95 % of the Burberry from my American Express (55,000 points which would wipe out all my points). The Dooney would be using 21,000 points because I am getting it on sale. Thing with the Burberry is that is is so much more $$$$ and that I may tire of the plaid look. The Burberry does not have exterior pockets (to hold my cell phone and keys - both fit nicely in the Dooney bag)  It is also canvas coated so I feel guilty about buying into the name. It is a classic which is great. Also when you look at it you know it is a Burberry, you don't get that with the Dooney bag.

Re: I need to come to a decison ...

  • If it doesn't have the features you're actually looking for, then I say Pass.   There will always be another "great deal" out there.

Heck, even a $149 purse is way out of my comfort zone.  Of course, I haven't purchased a new purse in years and usually shop at Penneys or Walmart.   I'm cheap like that.

  • DH and I don't travel much. We have done some weekend getaways but I would need way too many points to fly away somewhere. Also, we have DS and my parents are getting older to watch DS for a few days. DH parents are deceased. We also want to TTC #2 over the next few months so traveling is off the agenda for about two years. Once we have #2 and they are old enough we will be doing things like Sesame Place.
  • Get the bag that holds the items you use daily.  How much would it irritate you to buy a $500 bag and then not ever use it because it doesn't have a spot for your cell phone?

You list several other negatives to the Burberry bag as well, so it sounds like you would not be happy with it.

    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.

This, plus I can't imagine paying full price for a purse.  We have so many of them as women and styles change all the time.  I, myself, have a few Coach purses but have always purchased them at an outlet store with extra discounts.  Have you tried a Burberry outlet? you might find one with all the options you want, plus have enough to buy the matching wallet!  :o)

  • Hey, what you just wrote convinced me that the Burberry is a bad call.  Go with the dooney or if you are unsure (because you should LOVE a purse if you are spending more than $20), wait and keep looking for a bag you do love.

  • I just spent a ton of money on a Coach bag and even though I had reservations about the placement of the pockets I bought it anyway. Well, it just doesn't work for me so that is $400 wasted. I went for the "deal" and my love for the bag instead of what I really needed.

I am back using my 10 year old Dooney & Bourke bag that has the pockets exactly where I need them.

Wait until you find the right bag.

  • I gotta say, I'm usually not one for labels, logos or obvious brands, but I think I prefer the Burberry. It's really pretty and girly but that black handle gives it more of an edge.

eta: and the stuff the other girls said about it meeting your needs is important too. I put a cute little bag from Target down on last years Christmas wish list. I loved it so much I got one in another color, thinking, "hey, it's Target and cheap!"

Well, they don't even begin to meet my needs so I'm asking for a more sensible and expensive bag this year.

That stinks! Can't you return the bag since you just got it? I hear you on loving the bag. I love the way the Burberry bag catches my eye over the Dooney but will it be as functional as the Dooney. I'm going into a store tomorrow to see if the Burberry will hold nicely the things I usually carry. I love the look of the bag ( it is not a steal since it never goes on sale) but it has to carry everything I need it to carry. As for the Dooney...I spotted in in Lord and Taylor a few weeks ago but it was in  size that was too small. Then I found the medium size.  What is getting me is the Burberry is so polished and classy looking - but I guess looks only gets someone so far (LOL):)

I hope you can somehow return the bag or try and sell it online to get some of your money back.

I totally understand the love of the look.  Are there other brands that may have the same type of tattersal pattern you would like?

How about Brooks Brothers or Aquascutum ?  The Brooks Brothers link goes to an umbrella but it is just to show you what their signature pattern is.

I should try to sell my bag online. I used the bag a couple of times so I wouldn't feel right returning it.  I also have a Ju Ju Be diaper bag that I need to sell as well.  I am seeing a pattern here of me buying bags because I like the look of them (or the brand) and having them not work out for me. huh.

That's what I'm afraid of, buying the Burberry and then finding it does not suit my needs. I looked at the websites you suggested and nothing peaks my interest. Aside from the Burberry, if I am considering an all black bag that has a buckle or metal I like it to be a brass color, not silver. I know, I'm picky that way. That is another reason why the Dooney bag struck me.
  • If it were me, I would get the 2nd bag. I also liked it in the red and pale yellow - a lot - better than in the black really :). However, I don't give a tinker's darn if someone looks at my bag and knows who it is from or not.

The first one is pretty sweet and nice and big, but I don't like bags that sit that high under my shoulder and I would worry about the oilcloth and leather patent leather wouldn't hold up under lots of use. The soft squishy leather usually holds up really well.

BUT - if you are settling because its on sale, I wouldn't get either. Wait until you get a bag you like, esp. if its going to be for every day use.

  • If I had to choose between the two, I would pick the Burberrry. I don't really like the look of the Dooney and think for the price, you could find something nicer.

IMO, the Dooney Bag is not  a bad deal for the price, it was originally $235 and I got in on sale with tax, for $150.00. I went to see the Burberry bag in Nordstrom last night. They were selling it for $475 - I know not a big difference from $525 but anyway it is made in China and next to it was the same size / style made in Italy bag with the original horse logo, better straps (the authentic one ) for $625. I got even more confused because if I am going to spend over 300.00 I might as well go the extra $150 and get the original.  I was told by two stores that carry this bag that this look is not going anywhere any time soon. To spend this kind of money I should sit on it for a few months because now I do not know which one I want the authentic or the Novo one. Perhaps as a birthday present next year I could get it. I do not like to rush with stuff like this.
