Latch problems...advice?

I am having problems with my baby latching.  I had a lactation consultant at our home 3 weeks ago and it went great.  Latching was going pretty good for about a week and now she latches on but then wants to pull off to just my nipple.  I'm not going to hold her head on my breast to force it.. feeds go fine when I am engorged and my milk is gushing out but as soon as she has to work for it she won't and her wanting to just suck on my nipple doesn't help.

I don't want to pay for another lactation consultant but I think I might have to.  Anyone else deal with a similar latch problem?

Re: Latch problems...advice?

  • My little guy would do this...and we met with an LC who was a lifesaver.  Seriously.  Everyone kept telling me to unlatch him and relatch him, but that would make him mad, and cry, and it wasn't pleasant for me.  Instead, she showed me how to kinda grab the skin just behind the areola and slide my nipple further into his mouth *while* he was latched.  I don't know if that even makes sense, but basically instead of sandwiching and trying to get in quick, I'd get him latched, and then pull out the skin on one side to the side of his mouth and pull it into his mouth further.  I feel like there needs to be a video of this because it made a HUGE difference in his latch and I feel less like I'm battling if he doesn't get latched properly or loses his latch during a feed.

This sounds great if I could figure out exactly what your saying! lol.  I think I might have an idea...  You would pull the skin outside the areola at the corner of his mouth?
