Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

You know what really irks me?

MIL likes to test DDs food with her mouth.  She'll put DD's food on a spoon and then stick the food in her own mouth to test the temperature and then she gives it to DD.  She doesn't eat the food.  She puts her mouth all over it and then puts the slobbered on food in DDs mouth!

It's petty and it's one of those things that I'll never be able to talk to her about but I can't stand this!

Add to this the fact that she has horrible oral hygiene.  My intention isn't to be unkind in saying that, but it's just true.

Like she puts the spoon IN her mouth???

    YES

She puts the spoon with the food IN her mouth, then takes the spoon out of her mouth with food still on it then will give it to DD!

  • I've done that before...just a quick touch to the tongue. I've shared an ice cream cone with DD, though, too. Embarrassed. I however have excellent oral hygiene- my dentist even says so!

  • I've heard that mothers who have active tooth decay and test their children's food this way can pass on the tooth decay to their children.  So...
  • That is really gross. :(

You're her MOM, it's totally different!

  • Unecessary germ swappage IMO. DS and I share food, but I'm his mom and the kid is in my face all day anyways:)
  • Groooooossss. I'll occasionally taste food off DS's spoon to test for temperature, but there's no need to put the whole spoon of food in your mouth then give it to the kid.
  • My aunt did this to Miles at Thanksgiving.  The same aunt who gave my >2 month old spoonfuls of mashed potatoes last year.  And yelled at me for discipling my child this year when he was pushing another toddler.

    Yeah.  Really irksome.

  • Thats so gross. I would ask her to stop. We just touch lo's food to our lip to test the temp. Or I will just take a bite and eat what he is eating to test it.

  • That's disgusting!  DH and I don't even do that, but if we did, we would be the only people allowed to.

  • Coming from a hygienist: please tell her to stop!!! There are nasty things in slobber. That really grosses me out.

It's true that the bacteria that causes periodontal disease AND the bacteria that causes cavities can be transmitted to your LO, who is NOT born with that bacteria in her mouth. It is highly likely, especially if your MIL has poor oral hygiene, that your LO will have a higher risk of perio. disease and cavities if she continues to do that. Not to mention the other viruses that can be spread to her if MIL has them. Please tell her to stop!! YUCK!

I agree, and it's a big difference if you have excellent oral hygiene also.

  • Say something.  That's nasty.

  • So definitely say something or have your H do it. I am a pretty relaxed Mom with stuff like germs, but that is gross!  I always test his food to my lip and I am his mom.
