applique sewing ?

if i wanted to do an applique similar to this, which was hand sewn...  how do you keep the lettering from fraying?  would you fold the edges and topstitch before sewing to the shirt? or would you just turn the edges in as you hand sew?  is there a better/easier way to do this?

i want to make a shirt similar to this, i had originally planned on just using fabric paint (which i may still end up doing if sewing is too hard) but the applique version is just so cute!

oh! and would i need one of those embroidery hoops? or could i get by with out one?

Re: applique sewing ?

  • Iron your fabric to fusable interfacing, then cut out your letter and sew on with stitches like above, a zig zag stitch, or a strait stitch on your sewing machine.  The interfacing will keep the letters from fraying.

Oh, and if you are wanting everything lined up nicely, use an embroidery hoop to hold the t-shirt fabric still and smooth while sewing.

  • Just seconding Jenni's suggestion.  :)  Fusible interfacing makes all the difference in the world.
