Names becoming too popular?

These are the names we love, but I am worried the boy names especially are becoming too popular right now. I think the girls names will be ok, but not sure. We really dont want our kids to be 1 of several with the same name in school. Any opinions?

Boys - Quinn Grayson  &  Declan Blake

Girls - Alora Dominique  &  Lyla Genevieve

Re: Names becoming too popular?

  • IMO, I wouldn't say they are becoming too popular.

  • I think you're pretty safe popularity-wise, but like PP, I would caution you about Quinn, it's definitely unisex and more and more I'm seeing it used for girls, so you run the risk of your son sharing his name with a girl in his class.

  • Quinn and Lila (spelled correctly) are names you might want to keep an eye on, but I'd be surprised if your child will be one of several in the same class. People are using a wider variety of names now. Even highly ranked names on the SSA list are used less frequently and are by no means the majority.

Declan and Alora, though? No way. Don't worry about it. While Declan gets a lot of face time on this name board, I have yet to meet a little Declan (or a big one, for that matter). I almost never hear Alora on this board, and have never met one. Granted, everything depends on your area and what's popular there, but I would be surprised if your little Declan or Alora had to share his/her name with too many other people his/her age.

FWIW, I like Declan and Lila from your list. I don't like Quinn for a boy since it's becoming popular for girls, and I think Alora just sounds like a fantasy book character.

  • I don't know anyone IRL who named their kid Quinn or Declan. It's only popular on thebump name board in my experience. Alora - I think you're good there. Lyla - is getting kinda popular but I would still use it.

I don't take one single minute for granted.
  • I know two little Declans.  The only Quinn I know is my babysitter, and SHE is 16!
  • A good site to look at popularity of names through time:

  • How would you be pronouncing Lyla?

  • I have a cousin named Alorah and the name is definetly not common. I strongly prefer the -ah spelling.

  • I've met one Quinn, but it was a SHE. I agree with pp that it may be getting popular with the little girls, as the Quinn on GLEE is a girl.

I have never met a Declan (but I do see it pop up on this board) or an Alora, which is pretty and unique.

I have seen Lyla, but spelled Lila, Lilah, etc.

  • I like Alora. But then again, we`re using Aurelia if this is a girl Embarrassed. Quinn is turning unisex, and I`m meeting more girl Quinn`s then boys. Tongue Tied

  • We would be saying Lyla as in lie-la. We both dont like the Lila spelling and know a woman named Lila who says its constantly being pronounced lill-a. She actually considered changing it to a Y because then it sounds out more easily

I have never met a girl Quinn (the only one I have ever heard of was on Weeds, and I thought it was just a strange You-neek thing) as far as I know that wouldnt be a problem here, but food for thought I guess. That is my fave of the boy names

We would definitely not be using the ah spelling for Alora, both of us really hate unnecessary letters in names (and MH says it reminds him of the Torah haha)

Thanks for the input everyone :)
