Cloth Diapering

Going on vacation....CDs or sposies?

DH thinks I'm silly for thinking we should take our CDs and use them when we fly to see his parents this week. He'd rather buy disposables and use them while we're gone. His reasons are: luggage space, not flying home with a wetbag of dirty diapers, less to think about while we're driving about visiting different family members.

I'd love to hear your opinion.....Does he have points valid enough that I should be convinced? Or, should I stick to my guns?

Re: Going on vacation....CDs or sposies?

  • It depends. Do you really have to lug home dirty diapers or can you wash them before you come back?

If you can wash them, then I would say yes. If not, then no, I don't think it is worth the hassle.

I used disposables all the time with DD (when traveling). With DS, I have been pretty good about using cloth. I used a disposable for the first time (traveling) this last week, and it made me sad, because it felt so papery and not comfortable.

  • Personally, I'd probably use sposies unless I had a place I could wash. We don't go anywhere more than an overnight trip in cloth. It's just too difficult and we don't have enough diapers.

  • Our game plan is sposies when we travel unless we can wash. The only traveling we do is to chinchilla shows, and the hotels don't have anyplace to wash, so we will do sposies for those weekends (if she comes along).

When we go up to my family's cabin we will continue to CD, because there is a washer (no dryer though, but hanging on the line is fine by me!).

  • We've done two one-week trips this past month... one where we stayed with my parents, one where we stayed in a hotel.

When we stayed with my parents, we did cloth. To address your DH's concerns... they DO take up a LOT of luggage space, no doubt about it. We did diaper laundry the night before the flight home to avoid flying with a wetbag of dirty diapers. Washing wasn't really a big deal, since we could easily throw in a load in the morning before we started running around and then finish it that night, or do it while the kids were sleeping.

When we stayed in the hotel, we did disposables. One of my primary reasons for CD'ing is to save money, and it cost $4 to wash/dry ONE load at the hotel (and I probably would have had to do at least 2-3 loads while we were there)... I bought a jumbo pack of disposables for that price, and it lasted all week.

That said, being in disposables for that long was a HUGE pain... multiple blowouts (we NEVER have blowouts in cloth), DS got a rash, and ugh, they were sooooooo stinky! And I actually ended up doing regular clothing laundry one night, which I thought would be a pain (finding the time, etc.), and it really wasn't. It got me rethinking cloth while traveling... like, maybe if I did prefolds or an AI2 system on the road, I could get away with going 4-5 days between washing? That would cut down on cost/hassle. Hmmmm... we'll see!

  • As long as we have access to washers...we take cloth. The stash fills one standard carry-on bag, so we just cut down on how many outfits DH and I bring (I never end up wearing all those extra clothes anyways). I take my wetbags and pail liner too, in case I need overflow "dirty" storage. It worked great, no problems. We plan to do the same again this holiday trip.

TSA did give me a funny look when I packed the CD detergent in my carry-on...but they let it go with a cursory inspection. Will probably check that this time :P

  • As long as I had access to a washer, then I would bring cloth. We brought it in a week long vacation and were very happy we did. I would not fly back with dirty diapers though, so if I couldn't wash, I do disposables. That said, I would also put a diaper cover over the disposables, because I don't trust disposables to hold in much.
