Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Fetal Hydrops

I've never posted on here but I am wondering if anyone on here has ever had/lost a baby due to fetal hydrops. We were told at 2 weeks ago that our baby isn't going to make it due to the amount of fuild she has accumulated. I am currently 29 weeks and now were just waiting. if anyone has ever experienced anything like this could you send me your email. Thank you

  • I have never heard of this complication before.

Have you gone to get a 2nd opinion with a high-risk specialist?

  • We saw 2 specalists in our practice and another at Columbia in NYC. They had really high hopes at first but in a matter of 2 weeks we had 3 amnios and 1 shunt placement. There is so much fluid that nothing is working.  I think the hardest part is waiting. They don't know if/when her heart is going to stop and we have to wait and if we go full term the likely hood of her surviving is minimal.
  • I have no advice, just wanted to say I am so sorry you are going through this.

  • Cheesa.... I'm so sorry you are going through this.

During my 20 week ultrasound our baby was diagnosed with Severe Hygromas w/ Hydrops Fetalis.  They told us that same day that even though her heartbeat was strong, because of her current condition she was terminal.

I continued to carry her and went to the doctor weekly to check on both her heartbeat and my own.  Less than 3 weeks later we learned she had passed and I was induced.

I'm so very sorry for everything you are going through.

I'm here for you if you need an ear.

EDIT: We learned via an amnio taken the Monday after her ultrasound that she was completely missing her second sex chromosome, a condition called Turners.

  • They don't know why the hydrops are happening. They have done every test they can think of and everything comes back normal. Her heartbeat is relatively strong it's between 140-150 but every 7-10 mins it drops to 70-80 bpm. but her lungs are not forming properly. I am going to the doctors today and we are going to find out if they can take her now. I'll keep you updated. It def helps being able to talk about it. Thank you everyone.
  • 2 weeks ago we found out our little boy at 21 1/2 weeks, died from fetal hydrops.  the perinatal dr saw it on the 18 week u/s, but the radiologist missed it, so when we went for our next appt 3 weeks later (i had my 20 week u/s early just b/c we could), there was no h/b.  I had my d & e last wednesday (a week after we found out).  we are still waiting on the cause--we have ruled out fifths disease, just waiting to see if it was chromosomal, or possibly a heart defect.  i am so sorry, and i know what you are going through.  our boy had only died 2 or 3 days before we found out, so that was somewhat helpful, but his heartbeat was strong every time we got a chance to hear it.  i hope your dr has answers for you--i know my post op visit next week will hopefully yield some answers.  and i don't want to be more of a downer, but from what my dr said, even if we did catch it at 18 weeks, or sooner, and he didn't die when he did, there was nothing medically they could have done to save him.  please know my heart goes out to you!!!

  • We just got back from the doctors and they told us she has no chance of survival. If they take her now or 5 weeks from now her lungs aren't formed where she can breath on her own. So I have to go to the doctor every week to get checked to see if I get sick if I do they will enduce if not we will go until I go into labor. Thanks for all the support. I'll let you know if anything changes.

  • I am so sorry to hear about your baby.  One of my babies was diagnosed with T-13 and a fatal heart condition.  He is not expected to make it to full term.  The doctors say the heart condition alone would be a reason for the baby not to make it to full term, unfortunately the T-13 just makes it even more complicated.  We had a high risk NT scan, waited 4 weeks for a level 2 ultrasound and then the amnio.  It was the wost outcome to hear, and I am absolutely devestated.  It pains me to think that I will still carry him to full term (dead or alive) in order to give my baby girl a chance to live.

  • I am so sorry to hear about your baby girl and I agree the hardest part is having to carry full term. I went back to work today after being on bedrest for a week and everyone was asking when are you due again. Then you have to contemplate do you explain everything or do you just go along with it. How far along are you?
