infected belly button?

DS lost his umbilical cord stump about 3 weeks ago... we've had no problems at all.

But just now changing his diaper I noticed it is all red inside his belly button and a little crusty.  Do you think it is infected?

I am planning to call his pedi tomorrow, just curious if this has happened to anyone else?

    Does it smell?  Does it have little red lines radiating from it?

    Lilly had this about a week after her cord came off--it took awhile for the inside to dry out. I don't know about 3 weeks later though. Seems like it should be all dry by now.

    Did they have you rub it with alcohol and a q-tip? The hospital said they didn't tell people to do this anymore because they'd go overboard and end up keeping it wet longer, but the pedi said that I could use that method on the crusty belly button once a day to help it.

    I went into the pedi today and it is not infected Smile - they said it is just taking a little longer to dry out and heal.  I can put some rubbing alcohol on it every once in a while to help clean it out and keep it dry.
