infected belly button?

DS lost his umbilical cord stump about 3 weeks ago... we've had no problems at all.

But just now changing his diaper I noticed it is all red inside his belly button and a little crusty.  Do you think it is infected?

I am planning to call his pedi tomorrow, just curious if this has happened to anyone else?

Re: infected belly button?

  • Does it smell?  Does it have little red lines radiating from it?

  • Lilly had this about a week after her cord came off--it took awhile for the inside to dry out. I don't know about 3 weeks later though. Seems like it should be all dry by now.

Did they have you rub it with alcohol and a q-tip? The hospital said they didn't tell people to do this anymore because they'd go overboard and end up keeping it wet longer, but the pedi said that I could use that method on the crusty belly button once a day to help it.

  • I went into the pedi today and it is not infected Smile - they said it is just taking a little longer to dry out and heal.  I can put some rubbing alcohol on it every once in a while to help clean it out and keep it dry.
