2nd timers with high BP

Did you remain on medication during your first pregnancy, and if so, did it work the whole time?  Did you have to change the dosage at some point?  Do any additional monitoring?

I'm just curious because my first time around, they took me off my meds since my BP dropped so much; however, when I was about 7 months along, it skyrocketed and we couldn't get it back under control.  I had to go to my dr twice a week for NST's, ended up in the hospital a few times and in the end, had pre-e.

In an effort to avoid that mess, they have (thankfully) left me on 250mg of Aldomet this time.  I'm hoping that it keeps everything under control this time around! Right now, it's been running around 105/58 (which is super low for me), but I know it drops now & creeps back up later.

ETA-I'm 12 weeks, 5 days (I forgot that I don't have a ticker yet)

Re: 2nd timers with high BP

  • Yes!  I had BP issues starting around 20 weeks last pg.  I had never been medicated prior to being pg, but was always borderline hypertensive anyways.  After I stopped BF DS I was switched from lebetalol to norvasc (which worked out much better for me than lebetalol!)  I am obviously back on lebetalol this pg because Norvasc isn't safe for pg woman.  My pressures are already creaping up since my BFP and the dr has had to increase my dosage already (200mg 3x a day).  So needless to say I am very worried this time around.  I also developed Pre-e with DS at 37 weeks.  My doc is just keeping a close eye on me at this point, and I monitor at home (but I am mugh higher than you - 130s/80s)

With the last pg, they were constantly increasing my dosage.  I think at the end I was on about 600mg 2x a day.  It was like nothing could keep up with the constant rises.  I was getting NSTs 2x per week and was monitored more closely.

  • LakeBride-thanks for your input.  Sorry to hear you had such trouble last time, I hope it stays under control for you this time!

I was so surprised to hear how low it was at my appointment last week...I've had high BP & have been on meds for it for over 7 years now....it has never been that low before!
