Another Top Load HE question

I wash gdiaper inserts that I made myself and usually I use a small amount of Crunchy Clean and set the washer for a "whitest white" cycle and a prewash.  I noticed that the washer is using the detergent during the prewash (I opened the dispenser compartment and it was empty).  

The diapers seem to smell fine, but I am worried about them not getting clean enough.   Should I be setting my machine differently?  What does everyone else do?
