crusty eye

DD has always gotten some little eye boogies in the corners of both eyes after sleeping... not a lot, just like adults do, so I wasn't concerned. But now for the past day or two her left eye has been getting a lot. To the point that sometimes she can't even open her eye because its crusted shut. I've been wiping it with a warm wet wash cloth... but withing 15-20 minutes of wiping it, they start coming back.

Is this normal or is it worth a call to the doctor? (she has no other sign of infection or anything else... the eye isn't red, she doesn't seem fussy or seem like its bothering her... its just major eye boogies!)

Re: crusty eye

  • This just happened to my DS (almost 8 weeks old now).  It was his left eye and it would also get really watery in addition to the mucus.  It lasted a few days and now is gone. His eye was never red, either.

I have read in some books that this can be normal because the tear ducts are still getting up to speed, so the drainage isn't good and also stuff gets backed up and enters the eye.  I know you can't always trust books...

  • My son had really crusty eyes with a cold so I took him to the dr. They also said that his tear ducts were clogged. Warm wash cloth to get it out is the best. Also to lightly rub the sides of his nose to help unclog the tear duct a few times a day. If it gets red or anything it could be infected.
  • It really is prob. a tear duct. Massage the area with finger tip by starting at corner of the eye and lightly pulling down with finger tip this helps a whole lot. If it gets too bad the pedi may give you antibiotics to rub on the eye.

  • Yep! This just happened to my son Julian last week. He had a couple bouts with intense spit-up that came out his nose. About a day and a half later, his right eye started up with the crusty-mucus. The Pedi said exactly what other posters said and i looked it up online: tears drain out thru the nasal cavity and if its blocked, then the tear ducts can't drain properly or produce tears properly. She suggested every time I feed him, to just wipe his eye with a warm, wet cloth and massage under the eye with a clean finger. I found it didnt really start to clear up until I massaged right btwn the inner corner of the eye and the side of his nose. Once I started doing that, about every 3-4hrs, it cleared up in about a day! GL!

  • Is it goopy and runny or is it like crumbly and crusty? If it is goopy I would take her to the dr. My dd had a lot of goopy stuff coming from her right eye and we took her in and she had a bacterial conjunctivitis that they gave us some ointment for and it's getting a lot better.
