I'm breastfeeding. My son is almost 2 weeks old and my nipples are taking a beating. He wants to feed every hour on the hour. I heard it's ok to start pumping after 2 weeks. Some people say 4 weeks..and some says it's not good to pump till after that even.
My husband feels bad and wants me to get some sleep. He told me to just pump and he'll feed my breast milk through the bottle while I get some much needed zzzzz's.
So, what's your opinion on when it's ok to start pumping?? Any thoughts I'd appreciate!
Re: When did you start pumping??
I pumped right away
I had to pump right away as my breasts were so massively engorged that I was leaking nonstop and he couldn't get a latch. My LC recommeneded it in fact.
You can pump whenever you need to! Just make sure you don't get too upset when not much doesn't come out, because some people have a hard time pumping but plenty of milk.
SweetMissLaura,
I started pumping while still in the hospital. My son was a day old and we were having issues with him latching on. I pumped and syringe-fed him the colostrum. He's now 3 weeks old and I've continued pumping and bottle-feeding, as we've continued having trouble with latch. However, he has started nursing in the past couple of days and we've had no problem going between the bottle and breast. My ped recommended the breastflow bottle by first years. it simulates breastfeeding - the nipple shape is very similar to a real breast and there is a valve inside the nipple to keep the milk from pouring out, teaching baby to work to draw it out. it's sold at target.
good luck!
