Question about 1st trimester exercise

I have heard that you are not supposed to get overheated during your 1st trimester. However my doctor said it was ok to continue my zumba classes, elliptical, etc. I should have had her elaborate but these things do make me overheat. Can anyone clarify this for me. Are we not suppose to do anything that makes us break a sweat? I went to the gym last night ( I am 7 weeks) and did the elliptical for 40 minutes and was very hot from the workout. Is this okay?

Re: Question about 1st trimester exercise

  • As long as you did it before pregnancy, it is perfectly fine and good for you and the baby to continue. You sweat so you DON'T overheat. You're not walking out of there with a temperature of 102 degrees and if you are, that's a problem whether you are pregnant or not.

  • I have kept up with pretty much the same level of running since pre-pregnancy. When I think of getting overheating, I think of it in terms of no running outside when its 85 plus in Florida. Otherwise, I am comfortable breaking a sweat and still getting a good workout. I just try to listen to my body.... I know that sounds easier than done but if I really get winded, I slow down a bit or walk.

     Good Luck!

  • It's fine to sweat. It's not fine to sit in a hot tub, run outside when it's very hot, and things like that. Keeping up your exercise (even fairly intense exercise) is good for you and the baby. If you were doing it before, keep at it as long as you can. Listen to your body - if you feel lightheaded or faint, back off.
  • Hi Lisa,

I am TTC right now but I am a Zumba Instructor. My OB said it was ok for me to continue as long as I did it beforehand. She said she had marathon runners who ran all through their pregnancies until they gave birth. I told her about the intensity I have to give as an instructor and she told me it was ok to continue.

I would definitely double check but I think you should be ok. Just be careful during movies that involve twisting or pumping with the abs.
