I have two baby care ?'s (cradle cap & chaffing)

That I'd rather ask you guys than anyone else. lol

1. I think L has cradle cap.  Her scalp is flaky, but not dry.  The flakes actually feel sort of greasy & gunky.  I think I've read that a lot of people will use EVOO & then brush the flakes out - is that right?  Do you wash their hair after that or no?  And, if not, does it make their hair nasty greasy?

2.  L has a ton of rolls & is a sweaty little thing.  She is getting a bit chaffed like, on her thighs, arm pits, under her chin, etc.  My mom says, "This is why you use baby powder" and I say, "Um, no."  So what's the answer?  Is there an EF talc free baby powder you can recommend?  Would corn starch work/help?

Please help my poor flaky, shedding, sweaty, funky child. lol

Re: I have two baby care ?'s (cradle cap & chaffing)

  • i did use EVOO on N's scalp when he had cradle cap.  i can't remember if i washed it afterwards or not though.  it wasn't too greasy b/c i just put in on the spots where the flakes were, and he only had a few.

no clue on the chaffing though...i used lanolin for drool chafing under the chin, but i don't think i'd put that on arms or legs?

Yeah, that's what we used for chin & cheeks too.  I wonder if it would work as well in "folds"?  Might be worth a shot anyway!

  • For the chafing, try California Baby non-talc Powder.  I got mine at Target and I think it was like $10 or something and lasts forever.  I would stay away from Cornstarch since it's a moisture issue since it might end up causing yeast issues in the folds (soooo not fun).  The California Baby is a clay based powder.

Ahhh ... I didn't even think about the yeast issue.  Duh, Dobie!  Thanks for the rec.!  We'll give that a go. :)

  • I'd be a bit weary of the Lanoin in the folds, too - I'd imagine that it wouldn't let her skin breathe quite as well, and being as she's already having the sweaty issues...  Pure conjecture, but I'd be a bit cautious using it too much there.

Yeah, she's pretty much a sweaty beast.  I should probably print this thread out and share it on her wedding day.  I'm sure she'd be thrilled of the dainty feminine picture I've painted of her.

  • I use EVOO or coconut oil on DS's cradle cap, and I don't wash it out right after. He does get baths at night though, so it washes out then.
  • I also used EVOO on G's cradle crap when he had it i just used a couple drops and left it on for a while then used a fine toothed baby comb to scrap them off, they come right off, when I BF him I would pick at them with my nail (gross I know) it never came back.

For the chaffing, I have a skinny boy so I haven't had that issue sorry.

  • Thanks, guys!  We did the EVOO tonight and her head came pretty clear with the comb.  I think I used a bit too much because her hair does look a hot mess but eh, I guess it's worth it to not be so flaky!  I figured with as much as she has, and the texture, it wouldn't be a pretty picture but I'm sure it will de-funkify eventually. lol
