I can't stand it when people who are all about "Biblical names" get all offended when people want to Anglicize (?) differently so it won't be constantly mispronounced. Ex. Changing Niamh to Neve. Most of the Biblical names that are popular have been translated, (there is no J in the Hebrew alphabet). does this make sense?
ps. this has nothing to do with any Baby Name regulars. also this is not an excuse for parents who put useless H's or apostrophes in their children's names.
flame if you wish
Re: I have a baby name FFFC
I'm using it anyway, dang it!
I agree. One of my best friends is a named Ariel. It's strong, has a great meaning but whenever I talk about it people are all "eeeww Ariel's a girls name"
ETA: a guy named Ariel
And I will add mine.
I silently judge people who give their kids ridiculous names (ex: Chicory from the park the other day). To me, that screams "desperate to prove my awesome individuality through the coolness and uniqueness of my kids name". In my area, people are falling all over each other to be the cooler baby-namer.
That's my FFFC.
I was going to name my golden Doug from the Disney movie "Up" but he is now Indy (Indianapolis Colts). But I know what you mean!
I have one the ticks me off in particular. When you name your child K'leeanne ( Kayleeann) or J'son (Jason). It's not that much of a problem to add two or three letters.
DH and I liked the name Eliza until we thought we would use Ellie as a nn and remembered that MIL's dog's name is Ellie. :-(
Growing up we had a dog named Alex and a bird named Jacob. I guess it stuck because I named my dog Henry. I love people names on animals, but I understand what you mean. Still, he's such a Henry.
Technically it was Dug. Yep, big Pixar nerd here.
I love name FFFC - I have one...
I mixed up Lindsey and Quincy. We had a visitor, and I asked who there were here for, and I heard Lindsey. I called up Lindsey and said her mom was here. She was confused. Turns out it was for Quincy. I felt really embarrassed because I'm such a stickler for names, but I was also mortified at the possibility of calling up someone and telling them their dead mother had come to visit them. Thankfully, I found out later, Lindsey's mom was alive and well. Gave me a good scare though.
I'm also ready for the Teen Pregnancy show drama to be over, so I can regain some dignity when it comes to my love of the name, Amber.

I have to disagree. I think it's hilarious when dogs have men's names.... My brother's bulldog is "Douglas" and a friend's black lab is "Bruce"... so funny!

Here's mine and I'm not applying this to anyone directly on here, more of a IRL thing.
H and I both love names from "our generation." People always come back with "But they're so dated." I don't care. Every name is dated and if it's normal and spelled right I'm going for it.
Bonus points if said comment is from people who are into 1920s names like Hilda, Oliver etc.
I agree, I love dogs with normal people-names. My dad especially has an affinity for doing just that. My parents' dog is a goofy looking basset hound named Ed. Our family dog growing up was a really really fat spaniel named Dan. It's perfect.
I agree with the dog name confession above. DH and I already have 2 or 3 dog names picked out that would never be used for a child: Beowulf, Pelayo and Picasso (because DD loves saying the word Picasso).
My confession is that I dislike when people randomly post "suggest a mn for this fn" without giving me any background on their likes, dislikes, whether they care more about meaning or sound, whether they do or don't want the name to match the ethnicity of the fn, etc. And it drives me even crazier that I seem to always see the same names suggested in responses to these threads (which isn't surprising if you don't have much to go on, I know). I really try only to respond if I know someone with the fn in question whose mn seems particularly nice to me.
Siblings, Mercedes and Bentley...I kid, I kid.
If it makes you feel better, I knew where the name came from.

My FFFC is that I hate the name Kiersten. I had to literally stop my hands from typing when a poster asked about a nickname for the name. I hate it because while a lot of names are mispronounced I think that this name is one of the most mispronounced there is. People may say Kirsten or Kristen. Now it isn't the mispronouncing that bothers me, its how Kiersten's take it. In my experience, and I have worked with A LOT of women being a salon receptionist and hairstylist, they are the WORST when it comes to people saying their name wrong.
"No, Its KIIIEERRRRR sten." *eyeroll*
*looks sheepish* One of our cats is named Emma...partly because DH and I both liked the name but knew we would never name a kid something so popular/common. In our defense, her brother's name is Peri(short for Peridot, for his lightish yellow-green eyes), and since her eyes were a darker green we tried for something similar for her.
I just put this link on the post...

It covers everything you could possibly want in a middle name.

Bernard, Spanners, and Gwen are my cats. All our pet names come from UK tv shows so they are usually real names (Spanners being the exception). Future male pets names could include Jack, Bryn, Mickey, Gavin, Manny and females might be Fran, Stacey, Daisy, Nessa, Pam, etc.
FWIW I think it's funny that people are OK naming their kid the same thing as a family member who will be in their lives forever, but against naming their kid the same thing as a pet that won't be around very long (in the grand scheme of things). My uncle named a cow after each of my cousins and we all thought it was pretty cool to have a our own cow namesake. A cow has to be way worse than a cat or dog, right?
I have an Asher, Oliver, Marlee, and Izzie. Obviously I do the "human name" thing. It is a pet peeve of mine to name an animal Fluffy, Snowflake, Boots (when it has white on it's feet), Midnight (because it's black).. ugh. I would much rather name them nice normal names
"For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me the petition which I asked of him." 1 Samuel 1:27
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." Jeremiah 1:5
Hrm...not a peeve, exactly, but it's so weird to me seeing all the (very frequent) suggestions of "Anneliese" and "Annalise"...the first seems like someone threw in too many letters and the second gives me flashbacks to first grade, where my teacher actually had me convinced that both I and my family had been pronouncing my name wrong my whole life(she insisted on pronouncing it AH-na-leese, EVERY TIME).
It also amuses me somewhat to see the way my parents spelled my name suggested as the "actual Danish spelling." My parents knew someone in Denmark with the name, but it was spelled differently(several letters shorter), and my dad decided to "Americanize" the spelling when they named me.
(in case you couldn't guess, my given name is spelled Annelise)
I'm actually considering Annelise as a middle name because of the Danish ties and the spelling. Anneliese is a original, German spelling, but Annalise is some sort of phonetic, American bastardization I think. The worst is Analise...but Anal is still obvious in Annalise.
Anyway, your parents have good taste...I love your name.

Meh, I prefer animals with people names. I hate the uninspired "pet" names like Beauty, Midnight, Peanut, etc. I have Deacon and Phoebe, we're thinking of adding another pup to the mix and they'll be Stella or Archer.
My (late) FFFC-
I'm really effing annoyed at how often my #1 name has been coming up on the boards lately. I've even stopped mentioning it because I don't want to give anyone that suggestion.
