Family Dr only because we don't have a pedi locally. I live in a small town 3000'ish and the closest pedi is 60 miles away. I didn't want to have to drive that far for all the well baby visists or when DS was sick. We've said though that if we need a second opinion ever on an illness it will be with a pedi. I love our Dr that we go to and he's great with Burke.
My family doctor wont see babies. We love our pedi's office though and I had changed doctors a few years ago when we bought our house so there are no strong ties.
We did family doc b/c of my genectic issues, so when we need to test Snuggle it will be under the same group. We love the pedi there and I love DH and mine's doc so it seemed silly to stray.
I grew up going to a family practice and liked the fact that our doctor knows the whole family. It's also nice when you're there with the kids and they can do something for you. (I had the beginning of mastitis on a Friday when I brought Alex in for a checkup. Our doctor wrote me a script for antibiotics while I was there.) The 2 boys and I got our flu shots together. I also like that they have the whole family history. My doctor is about my age, so in theory I can see the same doctor most of my life (assuming that neither of us move).
Our pediatrician's office has 5 docs. I've met them all and like them all. They also have a 24 hour nurse line. I have used it many times and find it an amazingly useful added resource. I want my DDs doc to focus on children and children alone. They are very up to date and since there are 5 of them I don't get just one pedi's opinion. Since they all have opinions I like getting a wider view.
We go to a family doc that was highly recommended, and really he is great. My husband and I now see him too. I love that he knows the whole family. I've even contemplated switching to him for my next pregnancy.
When I was in the hospital having my daughter it seemed like I was asked a lot who LOs doctor was. When I'd say Dr. Sch..., the responses I got were amazing, like "Oh, I love him," or "he's just great," or "lucky you." It made me feel really good about our decision.
We have military medicine, so we get what we're assigned. DS's assigned provider is actually a pediatric Nurse Practitioner, who I absolutely loathe (not because she's an NP -- because she's a horrible provider with zero people skills). But our base's new Pedi is awesome, so I'm about to request a switch in PCP.
