Making Baby Food...

If you did this, how did you do it?  What type of food did you make? And why did you decide to make it? TIA!

Re: Making Baby Food...

  • I made fruit and veggie puree only. I pureed just about everything, and it was super easy. I did peaches, plums, sweet potato, green beans, peas, carrots, etc. I just usually steamed or boiled the food and blended it in my mini food processor and it was really easy. I stored it in these and had no issues unfreezing it.

  • I made all DD's food. Now she eats what we eat, just chopped up small or cooked softer.

DD started feeding herself small cut up foods at about 7 months. We started her on rice cereal and bananas at 4 and a half months.

    How did you do it?
I read some recipes on wholesomebaby.com and mostly just boiled fruits/veggies until soft and blended. I froze in ice cube trays and popped a few out every night to defrost in the fridge for the next day.

    What type of food?
mashed bananas in rice (then oat) cereal, peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli, squash, apple sauce, pear sauce, mangoes, peaches, cheese, avocado, yogurt, and more!

Why did you decide to make it?
    1. It is cheaper, i.e. I could get a lb. of organic carrots for 99 cents.
    2. It was really easy, did it while making our dinner a few times a week.
    3. I wouldn't eat unrefrigerated jarred veggies/meat, so I couldn't imagine giving it to DD.

#3 makes me sounds judge-y, but I swear I don't think pre-made baby food is bad. Most everyone I know thinks I was nuts to make it, but it really was simple.

  • i'm actually really darn proud that i made ALL of the baby food ds ate.  it was so easy and SO cheap.

seriously, if you have a blender or a food processor, and some ice cube trays, you're set!

i would just steam all kinds of veggies, or boil them, and then puree them.  pour into ice trays and then cover in plastic wrap, freeze, then pop them out into freezer bags for long term storage.

i liked adding lentils to the veggie mix to give some added protein. i'd also just chop up cooked chicken in a food processor and stir that into the veggie mix.

most of the fruits ds ate were mashable w/a fork so i never bothered to make those in bulk.

check out wholesomebaby.com  they have tons of info on making your own baby food.  they have recipes and all kinds of tips on there.  good luck!

  • Thanks for the tips and website.  I think I'm going to make the food this weekend.  I'm just hoping I have room in the freezer with all the breastmilk I have stored!
  • Ditto PP, I had some books and I used that website a ton for ideas! It was very satisfying to make her food, and while I didn't do it exclusively, it for sure saved money in the early stages.
