NBR decor help..

I keep meaning to take a picture of this, but let me see if I can describe it..

In our living room, right when you enter our house, there is a wall straight ahead of you, that has a ledge about 2/3 of the way up, and the ceilings are about 20 ft (vaulted). So, it's a tall wall.

We have a large map hung on the bottom of that large wall, but nothing on the ledge, or on the wall above the ledge. It's very...blank looking (as is our whole house, honestly!) The wall is about 10 ft wide, and the ledge is about 1.5 feet deep.

DH is painting right now, so I'm trying to think of decorating ideas. The previous ownders had some sort of tapestry hung up there (we still have the god awful brass brackets to prove it). I'd like to put something on the ledge itself, and on the wall above it. We'll probably take the map down eventually, and replace with an arrangement of family photos or something. The color scheme in that area will be brown/tan/deep red...so is my plan anyway. The wall will be a medium tan.

So... does anyone have any ideas of large wall hangings (like a medallion, or something?) We joke that we need something like a gigantic sailboat or something up there. It needs to be pretty huge to take up the space--probably at least four feet in diameter, if not larger.

I did pick out some 4-5 foot tall rattan woven "bottles" from World Market that would look nice with a bunch of dried bamboo shoots, so I think that's what we're going to put on the actual ledge, just off to one side. But I'm at a loss as to what to put on the wall above it to help fill in the space.

Any ideas? (or does this make no sense?) I'll try to remember to take a picture tonight...TIA!

LOL--DH already suggested a giant stuffed marlin. Smile

  • a wood panel? Maybe something like this

That is a tough design problem! Whatever you put there, it sounds like it'll be the first thing seen when you walk in.

Yes--it will be! So I don't want it to be too much, but something that would fill the space anyway.

The panel you posted is beautiful--that's kind of what I had in mind. Maybe something a little less ornate (and less expensive. LOL)

    Thanks!

LOL - no kidding. I've been wanting to use that panel as a headboard. But it is $$$. If you find something like it, but cheaper - please post.

We have a similar type wall area in our living room that DH suggested hanging a bulls head on -- men!  Not happening!

  • Z Gallerie has a LOT of beautiful wall art...the price on that panel was INSANE (imo), but they do have other stuff that's more affordable...

  • We had a similar issue above our mantle and fireplace.  I actually found an idea online to make a piece of wall art with a piece of fabric that you like.  It was a really inexpensive way to make a very large piece of artwork.   Here's a link to the site where I got the idea:

     https://howaboutorange.blogspot.com/2007/10/how-to-make-fabric-panel-wall-art.html

I bought my fabric at Not Just Linen's in Durham and the wood frame pieces at Jerry's Art-o-rama on Wake Forest Rd in Raleigh.  Most of the fabric at Non Just Linen's is only $7.99 a yard.

Keep an eye out at Home Goods (or even TJ Maxx) for something similar to this but less expensive.

That is a really neat idea!  I might try this one day.

  • I had a friend once who had a similar wall.  They had a large monogram letter (of their last name) in the middle and then some off centered (artsy) type floating shelves around it with neat and interesting "pieces" on the shelves.  And I know that description may be totally not understandable or imaginable...Sorry!

We have a similar setup at our house too-we did similar to this. We have 3 asst sized black metal vases from Pier 1 (hard to describe how they look but you get the point). We have them on one side of the ledge. We have nothing hanging on the wall above the ledge. The vases are enough.

We on the otherhand have nothing on the wall below the ledge...so we need to work on that.

  • Thanks for all the great ideas, y'all. Keep 'em coming! :-)

And Jenwill--that's good to know. Maybe the vases/bottles will be enough.

  • We had large awkward blank spaces on either side of our fireplace in our living room.  We needed a cheap option since we needed something for each side.  I ended up ordering antique ceiling tiles off of Ebay.  I love the look of them and the varying colors and chippyness of the paint.

Here is a picture of them up on our wall.  10 different tiles cost us $80 including shipping.  We only ended up using 8 (4 on each side).

OMG! I love those! If you don't mind-could you share the seller on ebay that you bought these from? They would be perfect on the big wall that we have... TIA!
