Great Cord Blook Article

I thought this article was helpful for me since I've decided not to store our babies cord privately.  I do hope that we will be able to donate it to a public storage bank.

  • I'm going to ask my OB about publicly storing or donating to research. Ever since I read about public storage a couple years ago, I've wanted to do it, but my hospital doesn't participate and the closest one that does is a couple hours away.  I'm hoping my OB likes the idea and give me some idea of where to look for info in our area.

  • I wish more people were aware that there is an option of public storage and that the what you donate will more than likely not benefit that particular child. I think too many of the privately owned banks push people into believing that this will save their child life.

  • Thank you for posting this, I was just about to myself!  I work with pediatric stem cell transplant patients and this is an incredibly common question.  These private banks "prey" on vulnerable parents to be.  Please do not fall for their line that storing your baby's cord blood could someday save their life.

  • "I've treated thousands of patients, and I've never used a child's own cord blood cells to treat leukemia, or sickle cell, or other genetic diseases, or immune deficiencies, or bone marrow failure," says Dr. Joanne Kurtzberg, director of the pediatric blood and marrow transplant program at Duke University Medical Center.

    Other transplant specialists agree.

"When a kid comes in with leukemia and the mom says, 'We stored his cord blood cells,' I've never used it," says Dr. Haydar Frangoul, director of the pediatric bone and marrow transplant program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

"It would be ridiculous to use the child's own cells," he adds. "It would be like taking someone with cystic fibrosis who needs a lung transplant and giving them back their own diseased lung."

  • I donated my daughter's cord blood.  If anyone delivering in the St. Louis area is interested, this is the cord blood bank we used:
