PSA: Amazon and Amazon Prime Membership

If you sign up for Amazon Mom (which is free), you get a free 3 month membership to Amazon Prime, which gives you free two day shipping.  I do this every year at Christmas because Amazon has such amazing deals and I can take advantage of them right away without having to meet the $25 minimum for super saver shipping.  You just have to remember to set up your account to not automatically renew the prime after the three months.  If you buy $25 in a single purchase from the baby store, they will automatically renew your prime for another month for free.

Just thought I would pass it along.  Last year, I found Amazon to have much better deals than anything I would in store.

Re: PSA: Amazon and Amazon Prime Membership

  • I love my Amazon prime membership, we pay for it beccause we use it year round. That being said I have been very unsatisfied with Amazon's pricing lately, I used to know that anything I go from them was a great deal, now I cross check their prices and 9 times out of 10 they are higher. Just a warning, but we still love our Amazon prime and you can't beat 3.99 ONE day shipping when I forget about a party or need something.

I really only use Amazon at Christmas time for that reason.  At Christmas, their Lightening Deals can be amazing, especially on toys, and the quick shipping is a bonus.

Do you ever use camelcamelcamel, where you can track the pricing history of a certain item on Amazon?  They'll even alert you when something gets to a price that you would want it at.

  • My dad shares his Prime membership with us and I frequently comment on how it is my favorite thing ever!  lol  Many times, items show up the next day.  I even had an item show up on the same day...that left me scratching my head, considering I had ordered it on Saturday morning and found it on my doorstep on Sunday morning.  It had to have come at some point late on Saturday.
  • Thanks for the heads up! When/ how do you set it to not renew automatically? Do you have to wait until the free trial is expired? Also, how much is it for a membership?

I just may need to test it out. I have a list of things I want from Amazon!

Well, the last three years you could do it as soon as you signed up under "manage my Prime Membership".  It looks like that is gone and you have to call to do it now, or you just wait until you're near the end and cancel it then.  I like to do it at the beginning so I don't forget.  A membership is $79, I believe, for a year.

Also, for the girls who already have it, I think I read that you can call and ask to have your membership extended by three months for free.  May be worth a call...

Such a cool website! I get all into analyzing the price fluctuations on Amazon during the holidays- LOVE this!

FYI, you can also split the prime membership among 5 (I think) different email addresses, so basically you could share it among different families/friends- that's another way to make it really affordable.

  • I love my Prime membership.  We use it year around, and it totally pays for itself in no time.  We do get it free this year because DH is a student, but even if we didn't, I'd still pay the yearly membership.

  • We've been members since it started and I added my close friends and family, they would die if I terminated!  Now that Amazon has added so many sellers you do have to be more careful....

  • My sister and I share a membership and I love it.  I use it year round because they have the best prices on books for sure, and usually for toys as well.

I thought you could only sign up for a free membership once per Amazon account.

Nope. You sometimes can only do it so often though. Last year I had to use DH's info.

  • I just signed up with my regular account and it said that the 3month trial expires and you don't have to do anything to cancel it.
  • If you haven't earned additional months, your free shipping benefits will simply expire. You will never be charged for enjoying the Amazon Prime shipping benefits offered by Amazon Mom. The automatic renewal policy in the Amazon Prime Terms & Conditions (which would require you to pay for Amazon Prime) does not apply to these benefits
