comfort nursing!!!

My daughter wants to comfort nurse all the time... she'll eat a little then just use me as a pacifier.

Is this something I should've prevented? I feel like it's my go to move once she is screaming or unhappy, however I find myself sitting on the couch with her for hours while she does this. She'll fall asleep and still suck. Sometimes if I remove her and put her down she will wake up mad and end up back there. Sometimes she will take a pacifier and I see her using her hands a lot.

Has this happened to anyone else? Do they out grow this? Should I stop this and how????

Re: comfort nursing!!!

  • this is normal. I let my dd pacify on me and now she is toddler and I don't have to look for a paci or get it for bed time, she doesn't have a 'lovey' or 'blankie' so no 'oops forgot her teddy' with a screaming toddler, it is easier I think. but if you chose you can give a paci, I tried when my dd was young and she never took to it. I had a sling and it was great, I could get thing done while she nursed then she usually was so out that I could put her down(sometimes) she now will nurse to sleep then I unlatch her and she rolls over to sleep, no big deal at all. I have got some good reading done at nap times that is for sure!

  • DS comfort nursed a lot, it really helped my supply and was the best thing I knew of for calming him down. He comfort nurses a LOT less often now, he's usually too busy and wanting to be seeing and doing stuff, but he comfort nursed quite a bit up until around 3 months. She's still so little, if you're ok with it it's not a bad thing.

You could try a pacifier if you just can't do it anymore. DS wouldn't take one at all. Good luck!

If she is sucking, but it doesn't seem like she is swallowing or getting much milk ...if any does this increase the supply at all?

  • DD does this and I've had to resort to a pacifier sometimes because I'm so sore.  I actually have an infection on one nipple and have to use Neosporin so I can only take so much comfort sucking right now.  I will do everything I can to make sure she is happy and, if she's hungry I will give her whatever she needs, but there's only so much I can handle right now.
