1st tri workout question

For years I have walked, run, practiced yoga, and done some ballet/pilates/yoga combo classes. However, I usualy switch my workouts up, so for example before I got pregnant I had been mostly walking and doing yoga for about 6 months. Is it safe to put jogging and the ballet/pilates/yoga classes back into my routine? (I am only 6 weeks and haven't even had my first appointment yet.) I want to stay as active as I can but be safe of course.

  • Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor. I don't even play one on TV.

    Do what feels okay. Listen to your body. Don't push too hard, and don't try to greatly increase your fitness. That said, try what you want and see how it goes. You may find some things work better than others. I've just stuck with what I was doing - but I was only swimming once a week and doing yoga once a week and those have been no problem to continue. I also lift weights and walk.

    Personally, I think too many people err on the side of caution. Exercise is good for you and good for the baby - exercising early on helps the placenta to grow well and nourish the baby better through the whole pregnancy.

    I might think twice about picking up something totally new because it might be more difficult to distinguish how it feels. It sounds like you've probably got the muscle memory to apply to those activities that you just haven't done recently. 

    One thing that may be relevant for you on the running thing is that jumping rope (similar to jogging) was weird for me at ~10 weeks. For me, it lasted two days and then I was back to my jump rope no problem. So listen to your body, but running/jumping rope seems to come and go for me, rather than being good or bad. 

    For yoga, I'd recommend practicing with a teacher trained in working with pregnancy. There are lots of great ways to tweak your practice and pranayama and asanas to avoid/focus on (e.g., what to do while the class is doing abdominals). Not all teachers have this training, but if you learn them early on, you can apply them to your whole practice and other classes.

    Do what feels "right".  Probably not the time to pick up something new, but you should be able to do whatever you did before if it feels good.

    Also ditto about too many people erring on the side of caution.  I was really lucky to have a doctor who was really encouraging about me doing everything I did before.  I ran, taught aerobics (until I was 41 weeks pregnant), backpacked, skiied (downhill and cross country), snowshoed, etc. etc. and had 2 very big, healthy babies.
