Yikes, that happened to my sister and she ended up needing a c-section because the baby was too big for her. I do not know why they wait so long. 9 days and then wait another 6 days, that is just wrong.

Wow - that's really long, unless she's been measuring way behind. My doc already warned me she doesn't let patients go beyond 41 weeks, and I was upset about possible induction till she explained all the potential complictions of being overdue.

That doesn't always happen, not even most of the time. My son was 6lbs3oz at 41 weeks. I was bullied into an induction that eventually led to a c-section...I wish I had let him bake a bit longer and maybe I wouldn't have had to have surgery.
She may not be measuring on time. If she ovulates late, the "pregnancy wheel" they use at the doctor's office and subsequent EDD will be off. If baby is measuring behind, they will put off an induction until baby is more on target.
While I would not be pleased, most doctors will not put off an induction without some medical reason. There is obviously a reason he is waiting.
I might be in the minority here, but I think it's a reasonable amount of time to wait before induction providing there isn't any medical reason to induce. If I understood you correctly and did the math right, your friend will be 42w on Friday.
I am guessing the doctor just wants to give your friend the best chance to go into labor on her own. While it's true that there can be complications for waiting too long for inductions, there can also be complications from inducing too early.
I think MW are more likely to wait to induce and let the patient go until 42 weeks. There is no harm in waiting, I'm actually happy to hear of a doctor not rushing to induce.

I would think that would be sort of dangerous for both mom and baby!
I had a friend who was just 10 days overdue, and had a really hard time with the delivery because her little guy was up to 10lbs 3 oz at that point!
