Anyone with low platelets?

I just saw my doctor today, and she tells me I have a mild case of low platelets (should be at 150 and I'm at 126). Anyone else experience/experiencing this? I feel so helpless since there's nothing I can do other than get a blood transfusion.

Re: Anyone with low platelets?

  • i have low plateletes, too.  i think mine were around 117.  i went to the hematologist and he said it was nothing to worry about until you get down to the 30s.  he said really the only thing that would be affected would be my ability to get an epidural or c-section if they get too low .  and since i'm planning on going natural, i'm not concerned.

  • I do - it's gestational thrombocytopenia, not ITP though. At my 28 week draw they were 123, 3 weeks later they were down to 108. I have another draw next week.

Your only option isn't a transfusion. They can treat it late in pregnancy with prednisone. If my next draw is less then 90, they'll put me on prednisone at 38 weeks.

I've been told it depends on who the anesthesiologist is, but some won't give an epi if your platelets are below 100, some use 75 as a low point, others 50. I'm trying to go without an epi anyway, but the bigger issue for me is if a c-section is needed and general anesthesia is all they'll do.

  • Mine were low as well - I am having blood drawn next Friday again - I forget what the numbers were, but as other posters stated, they have to be well under 100 for there to be any real concern.  And there are many options other than a blood transfusion.  Don't worry!

  • Thanks for the replies.  I didn't ask too much since she seemed  unconcerned (and based on my googling it might have just been an 'off' day).  I have another blood draw coming up, so hopefully my numbers will improve.

I also plan on going natural, so it's almost like a blessing in disguise, except for the hemorrhaging issue...the epidural threshold is pretty high at my hospital, so even if I wanted one, she said it would depend on my numbers not getting much lower.
