S/O Kids and TV time

Ok, so I don't get this, and maybe someone can explain it to me. I don't get why people keep TV on as background noise but wouldn't put a kids show on. Don't you think a child would get more exposure to TV if you have it on as background noise for hours than they would if you put a kids show on (which they will probably pay attention to all of 10 minutes of) for 20 minutes here and there?

FWIW-I don't think tv time here and there is horrible for kids so it's not one of those posts. I just don't understand that reasoning.

  • For us, when it's on reg. shows, DD doesn't even look at it.  It's more for me than for her.  (I really need my drs. fill lol).    That being said, I do let her watch some shows, and it's a complete diff type of attention.  When it's on as background noise, she doesn't give it a second look.

  • When I say its background noise, it is on and we are in the other room.  If a football game is on and we are in the basement, we are playing in an area where Snuggle can't see it unless he crawls over to it.  But, that is our time to hear the news, etc.

  • I don't really get it either. Just turn on some music!

  • I don't really get it either, but that may be because I have a toddler who understands everything (and parrots everything) she hears.  I don't want to take the chance of her picking up words that I don't want her to say (i.e., stupid, hell, damn, etc.) that come up in a lot of "regular" television.  If the TV is on, it's on Sprout or Nick Jr. when the kids are awake.  Or the Christmas music channel, lately!
I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.
  • I have it on for background noise for me, not for LO. I like to have the Today show on as we're playing or doing dishes, etc. I have other shows on throughout the day I like but we're not sitting there "watching" them...if that makes sense. Sometimes I'll turn Nick Jr. on if he's having his snacks or something. He doesn't really care what's on, sometimes he's interested, sometimes he's not. I like to have it on for me though. I don't like hearing music, I much prefer the TV in the background.

    This exactly.

I don't have the TV on all day, but I'll often turn it on in the morning as DS is playing and I'm making his breakfast. I'll put it on CNN or the Today Show. I'm not sitting on my asss watching TV all morning, but if something interesting comes on, I'll stop for a minute and pay attention. DS doesn't even look at the TV...he's too busy honing his new walking skills! But basically yes, I do turn it on for background noise.
