which do you have and do you know anything about the droid 2? it's the one with the slide out keyboard, but more importantly is buy one get one right now and so is the only way i can justify since dh is upgrading too.
I LOVE my Ally. It's the same quality as my husbands X but I have the slide out keyboard. He hates that he has to type on the screen with his big man fingers. His is the size of a game boy and mine is, well, phone sized. Mine seems to have a longer battery life and was a LOT cheaper.

how's the phone speed and the camera in comparison? i know it has like a 3.2mp camera versus the 5mp that the droid 2 does.
i also thought the droid ability to be a hotspot was cool till i realized it's an extra $20 a month. sigh.. but i've had LG phones for a while now (and the current one for 4 years which is a long time in phone time!!) and always loved them. and coming from a flip phone the smaller size is a draw too..

My camera is a little lower quality than the X but not horrible by any means. I have no complaints about the phone speed though, it's definitely on the same level of performance.
i have the original droid...like first generation. the droid 2 is practically the same. i love mine. The camera is good quality for a phone. The 2 is a little faster than mine but mine is fast enough.
I wanted the X, but they were out for like a month, so I went with the Droid 2. DH got the original Droid last Xmas. The 2 is pretty awesome. I'm actually really glad I got it over the X b/c having the slide-out keypad is really handy. I've got a hard shell protective cover on mine, so it does seem bulky, but if you're not scared of dropping yours (which I do all the time), the Droid 2 is a bit smaller than the original. The free turn by turn navigation app is really cool (and standard with the phone).
But, if you don't really care about Internet and e-mail on your phone, I'd just go with a non-smart phone. The extra 30.00/month/line doesn't seem like much when you've got the shiny floor model in your hand, but you'll definitely notice when all of your phone bills are 60.00 higher than they used to be.
