I Feel Disgusting.

I am not a glowing pregnant woman. I feel like just a fatty lazy over weight woman. I still dont look very pregnant although I have gained 10 lbs. I feel so guilty for even gaining that much weight since I am plus size to begin with. I am panicking about the next 9 weeks and I am ready to lose weight now. I want to start working out but just afraid I will hurt myself. BTW, my OB has said nothing about my weight gain. But does anyone else feel this way?

Re: I Feel Disgusting.

  • I certainly have my moments. I've noticed that a lot depends on what I'm wearing - if I hang around in my husband's sweat pants and t-shirt/sweatshirt (although it's comfy and fits well) I feel like a slob...if I'm wearing something maternity and fitted or flattering I feel soooo much better about myself!

Side note - if your dr. isn't worried, you shouldn't be either!!

  • I'm really impressed that you only gained 9lbs.

I'm not athletic at all, and hate to exercise, but the WII fit really makes me happy.  You choose from a variety of exercises (some are fun, like running through an obstacle course) and they are very short.  I like step aerobics, and the best part is that the program runs in 5 minute increments.  On days when I feel well, I can exercise for a half hour by replaying the exercises.  Other days it can easily do less and save my energy.

  • I certainly feel like this at times.  I've only gained 9 lbs in my pregnancy as well, but I have some days when I feel tiny and others where I'm feeling like a total cow.  I agree with PP, if you're doc isn't worried about the weight gain, you shouldn't be either.  Remember it's for the baby's benefit.

I would start slow working out -- maybe a couple walks a week.  I think at this point it might be a little late to start something heavy, but you should talk to your doc and get his recommendations.

  • First of all, you're completely gorgeous and do not look like a lazy woman. That aside, I understand that you are overweight and I'm not trying to patronize you or the way you are feeling, so here's my best attempt not to...

A few years ago I got to my highest weight (160, and I'm only 5'1). It was likely a result of stress, college, working at Starbucks (damn those delicious pastries). It took a lot of negative comments from friends and family members for me to realize how big I was getting (before this I always had weighed around 115, which was in my opinion too small). Eventually I decided that I had to make a change because I was sick all of the time and wasn't happy with the way I looked. I started evaluating the way I ate -- did I really need to drink four sodas a day (yes, FOUR!), and could I start fitting in a little exercise where it was convenient? I made a ton of little changes, and over the course of about six months I got down to 123.

Since then I've put on a little more weight, although I am itching to get back to exercise. Honestly, I think I'm at the point right now where I'm truly comfortable with my body and don't have a ton of hangups about it, but being pregnant may have something to do with that. It's hard to get to that point, but it's taken a long time and a lot of reassurance from my husband. One secret, dear... men like curves! My husband has begged me never to lose my chest or my giant butt :)

There are a few things you can do to start feeling better. I know for me, if I eat healthy I start to feel sooo much better. For me, that means drinking a lot of water, eating fruit, and staying away from fried greasy food and tons of sweets. If you don't have the energy to exercise start by parking your car further away from a store and taking the extra steps in and out. Take the stairs! Swap mayo on a sandwich for mustard, or ranch dressing for oil and vinegar.

Whatever you do, don't feel like you are alone in this. It's pretty difficult to be a woman in this world anyway when you see images of glamourous rail thin women, let alone being pregnant on top of that. I hope you start to feel better, and remember that you aren't alone :)

This...I think a lot of us are getting to the point where it's harder to feel good about ourselves right now. You aren't alone but be sure to talk to your doctor before doing too much exercise if you haven't been very active up to this point.
