My friend will be getting her PhD in 2 weeks and I want to give her something to commemorate the occasion!
I was thinking about maybe getting something personalized with Dr Herlastname on it but not sure which way to go.
Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: NBR: Gift ideas please!! (For PhD)
Maybe one of those office desk name plates with her name on it

My two angels
To the infinity power!!! I would have loved this. Particularly if you, my friend, joined me. An afternoon where we got side-by-side pedicures and drank champagne would have been lovely.
My best friend honored me by attending the public portion of my defense (it was not in her field, but she came anyway) and giving me a beautiful corsage to wear throughout. She was given a corsage by another woman when she defended and it is a tradition used to honor women who have achieved this milestone. I have since passed the tradition onto another woman and I would welcome you to pass it on to your friend.
Here are some of the other gifts I really liked, some of which were very meaningful to me:
My mother bought me a piece of art for my new office.
My adviser gave me a special copy of his favorite (related topic) book with a beautiful inscription.
A friend gave me magnets that spelled out Dr. <lastname> and another some stainless steel letters that spelled out the same thing. I have them on top of the chalkboard in my office.
A faculty member gave me a leather portfolio with my name engraved. I've actually used that when I give talks and it lets me organize papers in a very classy way.
I bought myself some picture frames for my desk. My husband bought me a chair and lights from IKEA to make my office look a little more designer/comfy.
