Help with DH

When I started talking about CDing with DH, he was totally on board.  Now his mother has scared him.  I have shown him all of the research I have done and how much money it will save...and all that good stuff.  This is what he is hung up on:  scraping poop!  I told him it really isn't going to be any different than using sposies for this, he would still have to scrape poop...but now he's all freaked out about it.  Any ideas for how I can put his mind back at ease??

Re: Help with DH

  • Are you Bfing?  I don't know about formula poop but with BF poop there is no scraping for the first 6 months.

Once you start solids you can either scrape it off or spray it off with a diaper sprayer or dunk it in the toilet.  I have a utility sink that I use with a washborad so when I get home from work either H or I do the dirty diapers in 5 minutes.

  • FWIW I have never scraped poop.  Before soilds, the poop can go right in the wash since its water soluable.  I have a diaper sprayer for the sticky solids poop, but 90% of the time I can just plop it in the toilet.

  • I just started using CD's and we use flushable liners. Sometimes they contain the poop 100%. I do not think that we could CD without them.

  • I don't know many CD mommies who actually have to scrape poop.  If you BF, you just toss the dirty diaper into the wetbag, then straight into the washer at wash time - no scraping, rinsing or dunking required. It's super easy. I'm not sure about FF.  Once you start solids, I've seen that a lot of ladies just plop what they can into the toilet, maybe do a quick dunk/rinse, then toss in the washer like that.  We haven't started solids though, so I have no experience with that.  They do sell sprayers that you can attach to your toilet though, so instead of scraping and dunking, you can just plop and spray.  I'd say that even if you have to scrape the poo, it's no worse than wiping it from LO's bum and probably takes less time!

  • 1. He won't even have to worry about it until your LO starts solids.

    2. It only last a few weeks before it becomes ploppable.

    3. If it's that big a deal, offer to be the poop remover. DH won't get near DD's poopy CDs, so he leaves them for me.

that is excellent advice, and the sprayer does a great job too!

  • Once your DH sees that it's quite easy to do, he'll be on board.  If not, I totally agree-- just volunteer to be the poop diaper person-- he can leave them for you on top of the pail.  Good luck with CD!
  • I BF so we just wash the poopy ones now.  When DD starts solids shortly we plan to scrape when we can't plop.  I will probably be on poop patrol though.  I am just not going to even mention who will do what & if DH jumps in then cool.  Otherwise, I'll do it myself.

Why is your DH's mom concerned with how you'll diaper your child?  Is she really going to be changing that many diapers?

  • I got DH on board by agreeing to only buy a NB stash to start (mostly pre-folds and covers) and if we didn't like it we could switch.  DH ended up loving it and starting hunting for OS dipes himself after 4 weeks.
  • Just an FYI, FF poop is also water soluble.  You don't have to worry about poop until you start solids though.  And by then it's pretty ploppable.  DH will sometimes plop it but sometimes he saves it for me, which I don't really mind.
