High-Risk Pregnancy

Newly diagnosed with GD

I was just diagnosed with GD on Tuesday. I went to a dietitian today and started on the diet and checking my blood today as well. I have an appointment with my doctor in a week to go over my numbers to make sure they are being regulated by the diet. I really have not been informed on anything by my doctor yet, so everything I know is because of google! Is it normal for my blood glucose to be normal? The two times I have checked so far today, they have been normal. My main questions are pertaining to the baby though...is it normal for them to monitor the baby closer? I have read that there may be growth ultrasounds to make sure the baby isn't getting bigger than it should, but if my levels are under control- do they still do this? I guess I don't really have any direct questions, my mind is just going in a hundred different directions thinking of all the questions I will have for the doctor next week! Thanks for letting me ramble with no real purpose or direction Smile

  • Once you get used to having GD, it will not be so bad. Even if your blood sugar levels are within normal range, they are still going to watch you pretty closly since you are high risk. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes before I got pregnant, and they are keeping a pretty close eye on my blood sugar and my diet. So just keep to your diet and keep your blood sugar in normal range, and you should be fine! Best of luck!

  • Sorry to hear about your diagnosis.  It gets much easier to figure it all out after a bit of time and it doesn't take long.  My GD was well controlled at 28 weeks but I ended up needing insulin about 4 weeks later to control my fasting numbers, which are not diet controlled.  My endocrinologist has explained that blood sugar generally becomes harder to control as the pregnancy continues.  Most of my numbers are still good and I still am challenged by the fasting numbers.

As far as monitoring goes, I had two appointments at the diabetes clinic at the hospital to see the nurse and dietician.  I have had weekly appointments with my endocrinologist since I was diagnosed (sometimes he would do the appointments by phone to check my #'s since I live 2 hours away) and I started weekly OB appointments at 34 weeks instead of the standard 36 weeks.  I also started weekly NSTs at 34 weeks.  I just had my first ultrasound since 19 weeks yesterday at 38.5 weeks.  My fundal height has been measuring right on or a little behind but the ultrasound yesterday showed a very big baby (currently 9.7 lbs) so I can't wait to hear what my OB has to say on Wed.

I'm am currently scheduled for an induction next week and my OB had said he wouldn't let me go passed my due date (15th) since I was insulin dependent.

Good luck!  It will definitely get easier.

Thanks for the info! I wonder if your doctor will induce you sooner since your baby is so big already? Good luck!

  • Being diagnosed is very scary at first but it's pretty easy to deal with.  I am able to control my numbers through out the day by diet but I have trouble with my fasting numbers.  I am on insulin at night and have actually gone down 2 units in the last 3 weeks.  It will get frustrating.  One minute you are fine digesting a certain food, the next time you eat it it may throw off your numbers.  I went through a lot of trial and error but in the end have come up with a pretty solid diet plan (with the help of the dietitian and endocrinologist).  Just be careful that you don't limit your carbs too much.  That can increase the keytones in your body which are not good for baby.

I had my first growth ultrasound at 33.5 weeks and just had one again on Thursday.  LO is about 6lbs 4 ozs and is a happy little camper in there.  I am also being monitored because I have a cerclage.  The doctor will not let me go 40 weeks so depending on how my stitch removal goes, I will be induced either the 16th or 23rd of this month.

Hang in there.  The girls on here have been very supportive.
