Question for moms whose kids ride a bus to school.

Is your child allowed to get on one bus to go to school and ride another route home from school?

I was talking to another mom with a child at the school DD will go to next year.  She said her child is able to get on the bus near their home in the morning but gets off a stop later in the afternoon so she can go to the babysitter's house.  I would like the same set-up but the other mom sad the school district wouldn't allow it since in our case, my DD would have to ride one route from our house in the morning but it would be a different route/driver in the afternoon.  She says it's allowed in her case since it's the same route, just different stops.

I'm just thinking ahead about the logistics of going back to work next year.  Does anyone have a child who rides two different routes in the morning/afternoon?

  • I'd call the school transportation office, it's not unheard of that kids have different situations in the AM and PM.  not sure if you're already going to the babysitter in the AM, but if you are you could have her just ride that route both ways.  There are a few kids that get picked up in the AM from DD's preschool b/c the bus comes a little on the late side in our area.  not all of them come back to the PS in the afternoon.

  • We drop off & pick up b/c she's technically out of district, BUT they did offer it as a possibility for in-district.  Def. try to find out.

  • We fill out a transportation form where we fill out am pick up address and pm drop off address, so yet it can be on different routes, it just can't vary by day (ie couldn't drop off at daycare some days and home others).

  • She's full of sh!t.  DS gets on the bus at our house and gets off at the sitters after school, on a very different route.   Call the transportation department and find out, I guess it is possible that in your district it is not allowed but highly unlikely as that would put most parents in a bind.

  • I would call the school bus office and ask.  I have friends whose kids do either morning or after school care who go to or come from places other than home and they are on different routes.  I think it could be worked out in advance and as long as its an everyday type of thing, I would think the school would work with you.
