School holiday parties?

I know this is crazy early to start thinking about a kindergarten Christmas party, but I got to help with E's Halloween party and the teacher offered me the chance to organize the Christmas party.  I am really excited and would like to get some ideas early.

Has anyone here been to or helped with one?  I'd love to hear what sort of stuff was done.  Favors?  Foods?  Drinks?

The only thing I've come up with so far is maybe making an ornament for each kid to include with their bag, or maybe use it as the name tag on the bag.  And for the bags I was thinking maybe use paper bags and decorate them with snowflake stamps.

  • In my class we have centers made up for 3-5 kids and they rotate after about 15 min.  One center that is continually a hit is the decorate your own cookie center.  We just buy some plain sugar or short bread cookies, make 2 colours of icing, and get some candies for them to put on.  It is always a winner!

  • My mom still hangs up the ornament I made in Kindergarten for her. It is a green piece of construction paper cut out to look like a wreath w/ a polaroid photo of me in the middle and a little red piece of string strung through it. The whole thing is covered in that sort of laminate sticky paper stuff. If you know anyone who has a digital camera and one of those tiny photo printers you could easily do this on the spot and they could decorate them there and take them home. You could also do make your own snow men with glue, cotton balls and glitter on little cardboard cut outs. You could just cut them out of cereal boxes or whatever you have around. You could make paper chain garlands. I love the decorate your own cookie idea, too.

That sounds a lot better than the one I made in kindergarten. Mine was Popsicle sticks glued in a triangle with a couple of sequins glued on (they've disappeared in the last 20 years) and a piece of red yarn to hold it on the tree. My mom still puts it up. *groan* I made so many prettier ornaments! Why can't she put those up?

We have a kids' Christmas party at the university where I work and this is one thing we always do.  The kids LOVE it.

I also made ornaments like each of these in preschool & kindergarten:
