Iron/Vitamin supplement

I had my DDs 9 month check up today and forgot to ask about their iron/vitamin drops. We have use poly vi sol.  I didn't realize they start to check iron levels around 9 months... I'm going to call tomorrow.  Do you still give your LO an iron/vitamin supplement?  If not, when did you stop?

Re: Iron/Vitamin supplement

  • I'm supposed to, but I stopped a while ago. We had to do Poli-Vi-Sol plus extra iron. It was really causing problems with DS's stomach (which he has issues with anyways). I stopped the extra Iron first and when that didn't help I stopped the vitamins as well. He is much better without them. I told my Ped at our 6 month appointment I stopped them and why. She didn't seem to mind.

  • We stopped almost right away. They were irritating DD's stomach and smelled awful. DD is breastfed and the neos told us that the vitamins and iron were not necessary if DD was going to be breastfed.
  • DD had some anemia of prematurity, so she's been on an iron supplement for a long time.  She just had her 15-month check and they'd like her to stay on it since it's keeping her hemoglobin in a normal range.  We haven't had any constipation issues, but I understand that can be common.

  • When dd was born I was told she was anemic. I also had issues for a few issues after she was born. (I remember sitting head to toe in fleece right in front of the fireplace shivering...) That said, I'm not sure I was told this because of my issues or what, but they said that breastfeeding her was okay, but she wouldn't be getting enough iron, so they started her on the poly drops with iron in the NICU.

She's had bloodwork over the past year and she still needs it, even now that she houses any meats that I give her. I'll stop once she starts getting a regular level in her labs. My labs still come back inconsistnatly wonky even taking my PNV...
