Poll and middle name question

First the obvious poll question ;-)  Saoirse or Siobhan??

These were our girl names last time so they are top of the list this time (just found out we are having a girl today!).  One is my favorite and the other DH's.  And, yes, I realize she'll have to pronounce them for most people - not worried about that.  Current kiddo is named Callum in case that matters to anyone.

Second question...I kept my maiden name - it's kiddo's middle name.  I had originally thought that all our children would have that as their middle name instead of giving them a hyphenated last name (so kiddo is Callum Sinclair Burke).  I like the idea but DH thinks it's weird.  What are your thoughts??

Re: Poll and middle name question

  • I like both, but I love Saoirse!

    ETA: I think it's fine to use Sinclair as the mn for both of your children.

    I like unique names but how do you pronounce these?

    Saoirse = Seer-sha

    Siobhan = Sheh-vawn

  • Like both, but LOVE Saoirse!

    I also like the idea of giving the kids your maiden name as middle name. We are most likely doing hyphenated for ours, but if we opted not to do that, we'd definitely do my maiden name as a middle for all.

  • I LOVE Saoirse (oh no, not sure I spelled that right and now your poll isn't visible to me). I love the sound of it and the meaning. I also think it's gaining enough currency to not be a huge deal pronunciation-wise.

    As for the mn, I think your DH is probably coming from the same place my DH did when we had the maiden-name-as-mn-for-a-girl discussions. DH is from the deep south and he felt that a girl should have a feminine mn she could use as a double name if she chose to (never mind that I never envisioned calling her by both names). I can see both sides of the argument, but since I didn't already have a boy with my maiden name as a mn and since DH conceded at the very last minute (1 day after DD was born) to use my favorite mn, we didn't end up using my maiden name.

  • I voted for Siobhan only because that was the one I knew how to pronounce.  Saoirse is really pretty but NO ONE will get it right the first time.
  • I prefer Saoirse! I love the pronunciation. :)

  • I think it is fine for siblings to share middle names.
  • It's fine to give both kids the same mn. I know some families where this is the the tradition.

  • I like the idea of giving both/all kids your last name as their middle name.

    I don't have input on the poll though since I didn't know how to pronounce either of them. Even after I read your answer, its hard for me to remember...

  • I like your plan of using Sinclair for a middle name for all the kids!  Congrats on your girl :-)
  • I LOVE Saoirse. I think most people will have less trouble with Siobhan (pronunciation-wise) since it's a little more common to see in the US. But Saoirse is prettier. She'll have to spell it out for people, but you know what? My friend Katie/Kathryn has to spell her name for people too.

    I think the middle name thing is fine. Or how about two middles? Are you down for that? My husband and I will probably be giving our kids my last name as a second middle (his second middle is his mother's maiden name). I definitely like the idea of a meaningful middle name.
