Leaving work after baby is born ?

It might be an option for me to not come back to work after LO is born.  Currently I carry the insurance for DD, DH and I.  We were going to switch over to DH's insurance during the open enrollment period but apparently my insurance would end on 1/1/11 and his wouldn't begin until 2/1/11 which is not an option being pg and having a 2 YO.  Is anyone else in a situation like this, going to be or just have any advice on it?

  • I don't really have any experience with this.  But would cobra be an option for that month that you aren't covered.

I honestly have no knowledge on cobra and how it works, but it could be worth looking into.

  • You should be able to enroll in your husbands insurance no matter what time of year because loss of other insurance is one of those reasons to be able to avoid the enrollment period.  I would look into it with your husbands policies.  This is our plan too.

  • Look into extended/lapse coverage policies. I took a Life insurance course in Florida(part of it covered medical too, for some odd reason) and in FL it is law that your old ins cover you for 30 days so your new ins can come into full effect. HTH!

This. I also believe that in most states a change in family (like a birth) allows you to change your enrollment. You should be able to keep your insurance until baby is born and then open enroll on DH's due to your family change. Check to be sure, but that is how both mine and DH's insurance works.

  • I know that for ours, the baby's birth is considered a "qualifying event". Most insurances probably have this policy when you have a baby, there is a death, divorce, etc. You dont have to do it during open enrollment when you have a qualifying event.
