Probably an obsessive question

So, I'm 9w3d with my little twinlets, and I have yet to gain a pound--in fact, I've lost weight. I know this isn't unusual when a mom has morning sickness, but I've had none and I eat like a horse. My partner (the biomom of our other two kids) thinks it's just because the babies are taking care of consuming what I eat, but I've heard it's important to gain a good deal of your twin weight in the early months.

I guess I just feel like I'm doing something wrong. I'm not able to eat the supposed 2700 calories that are recommended--I average 2000 at this point and some of that is deliberately high calorie food. I just can't eat any more than I do, and I feel like I'm eating all the time! I know the ability to eat this much food is going to wane as I get farther along. I have a hiatal hernia, and I'm told that just makes it harder to eat as the babies get bigger.

Any suggestions? Or am I being way too paranoid and the weight will pile on when it needs to?

Re: Probably an obsessive question

  • I would try not to worry about it.  I'm a firm believer (as was my OB) that the babies will take from you what they need.  The only one to suffer from not eating enough, or eating the wrong things like too much chocolate, is you!

  • I wouldn't worry about it either. I usually was only about to get in about 1800 calories a day and only gained 20 lbs. I did get diagnosed with GD at about 27 weeks, so that kept me from eating junk and on a good eating plan and probably contributed to the lack of weight gain. Regardless, my twins were perfect and healthy. 2700 calories is a lot! My doc was recommending 2200 and I could hardly get those in while eating high calorie foods.

  • Congrats on the twins! My wife didn't gain any weight until the 2nd tri, and the babes were fine- our OB didn't worry and I don't think you should. Good luck!

  • I wouldn't worry about it, I lost 10lbs during the 1st tri and my OB wasn't concerned, I just ate what I could and when I could. And early on, you aren't going to gain much weight, I think at 20 weeks I was only up 10lbs, I ended up gaining 62lbs total. If you are concerned by it I would bring it up at your next appointment, but the babies will take from you what they need and the weight will come.

  • I lost 10lbs first tri, and gained a total of 20lbs for my whole twin pregnancy.  I didn't worry about my weight, I ate heathly when I was hungry and drank a ton  of water.  As long as your OB isn't concerned then you have many other things that you can worry about. :)

  • if it makes you feel better I lost 30lbs with in the first 4 months of my pregnancy with my twins. I did gain abot 20lbs back by the time the twins were born 2 years ago! I had very healthy babies born at 36 weeks and 4 days weighing in at 6lbs 3oz and 7lbs 10oz.

They kept telling me as long as the babies were growing at my monthly u/s it is fine!

  • Congrats on your twins!!  I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as the babies are growing well.  I lost 15 lbs the first trimester and only gained 12 back, so when  I had my twins I was down 3 pounds from my prepregnancy weight.  My dr. was never concerned b/c the babies were growing so well (over 6 pounds each at birth).  Good luck with everything!!
