Suggestions on OB/GYN

My husband and I just found out that we are 4 weeks pregnant (YAY!) but I don't have an OB/GYN. We moved to NM about a year ago and I have a PCP but don't really like her or her style. We live in Rio Rancho, but I work downtown.  We have friends that delivered at UNM and loved it - but I don?t want to ask her because we are so early in our pregnancy that I don't want to rouse suspicion.  Any suggestions for a great OB/GYN and Hospital group??????

Re: Suggestions on OB/GYN

  • First off - congrats!

Both of my kids were delivered by Dr. Consuelo Carmona with Presbyterian Women's Group.  I adore her.  She is located at their downtown hospital at I-25 and Cedar.  Not sure what insurance she takes, but she's worth a call.  Hope this helps!

  • I also moved to NM a couple of years ago and had a great reccomendation from a co-worker. I go to the Women's Specialists of New Mexico. They actually have several great Dr.s & Midwifes. They have several offices around town. I've not had a negative experience w/ them what so ever. I'm actually seeing a Midwife for my pregnancy and love her, but I also have an AWESOME OB in the same practice. They have a new office on Jefferson Lane that's really nice. They also have ultrasound people in their office, which is great!

  • My OB is also at Women's Specialist of NM at their downtown office. Her name is Villareal and she is phenomenal!! GL!
  • Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I also had Villareal the first time before my miscarriage and she was really nice. This time around, she was on maternity leave and then my insurance changed to Lovelace so I changed and got an awesome doctor that was highly recommended by many other doctors. His name is Dr. Joel Teicher he is with ABQ Health Partners (Lovelace). He will move his schedule around for you if you need to be seen, even if he's booked up, I liked that since most doctors will not do that even if you have to go in.

I also had Rebecca Okun at Women's Specialists and she was not personable at all and her nurse (Leslie) is AAAAAAAAAAWEFUL and has no sensitive bone in her body. Long story short, I had an appointment set for a new pregnancy and after having a miscarriage, called to make an appointment and she said they were booked up 3 months. I said I can't wait that long, then told her that I would just use my existing appointment in a week instead. She called me back after a couple minutes to let me know that she canceled my appointment because "it's for new mothers and you are no longer in that category". Talk about a knife in the heart. She said it so cold and rude without any sympathy, I literally hung up the phone sobbing.

Dr. Teicher has been awesome, I highly recommend him, he's very personable and caring and asks about how you are doing and wants to know about you. He is mostly at the Journal Center but also sometimes at Women's Hospital.  Good Luck!!

  • Congrats! I aslo went ot Womens specialists and had Dr. Okun. I absolutely LOVE Dr. Okun - she has been my GYN since college.  She also has delivered most of my friends babies as well.  She only delivers at Pres, but I know Womens specialists have Drs and midwives who deliver at Lovelace as well.  I also saw Carmona during DS's delivery and liked her as well.

Pres has improved a lot between DS and DD, but I've heard UNM's birthing center is really nice, but since it is a teaching hospital there are a lot of students assisting.

where you deliver/OBGYN probably depends on your insurance.  I could only have Pres.

    Good Luck!

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with Leslie - Honestly she made me cry once during my last pregnancy as well. I told Dr. Okun and she was going to talk to her - after that Leslie wasn't the nurse that called me back.

Dr. Okun's personality is definately very straight forward and direct, but she is extremely knowledgable and always remembers details about me and my family.  I didn't see her for almost 10 years when I lived in Phoenix and at my first appointment after I moved back (pg with DS) she remembered me, my sisters and my mom.

  • thank you so much for all of your suggestions - that is hands down one of the hardest things when in a "new" city.

I will check into these names and keep you guys posted on how everything works out!

     I am so excited!

  • We are seeing Pat Heinz, CNM at Women's Specialists of New Mexico (Jefferson Lane office) and DH and I both really like her!  She is all about advocating for you and what you want if you want a natural birth!  She fit out style very well!
  • We're seeing Dr. Caridi. I absolutely LOVE him. I don;'t know if he is high risk only, but I highly recommend him!

I don't know about a hospital group (other than pres, i'm a huge pres fan) but my OB/GYN is great! Dr. Victoria Garcia in the Pres building at 528 and High Resort.
